VI: FAMILY – The Echo Society – A secret location in Silverlake revealed only after tickets are purchased
October 20-22
The theme of “Family” will be explored during this three-night festival. Each concert features the work of seven composers being performed in seven different rooms simultaneously. Those in attendance will be given the opportunity to move freely from one room to another. Amongst the participants are Chris Taylor from Grizzly Bear and Jónsi, the lead singer of Sigur Ros.
BRIGHT STAR – Ahmanson Theatre
October 20-November 19th
You might remember Tony nominee Carmen Cusack for her roles in For the Record: Scorsese at the Wallis Annenberg Center in Beverly Hills or for her role as Nelly Forbush in the touring production of South Pacific at the Ahmanson. She returns to the downtown venue to recreate her nominated performance in this musical by Edie Brickell and Steve Martin. The musical is a love story set in the South during the 1920s-1940s. If you love Steve Martin think more banjo than “King Tut.”
MIRGA CONDUCTS MAHLER – Walt Disney Concert Hall
October 20-October 21
Conductor Mirga Grazintyé-Tyla, who last year was named the Associate Conductor for the LA Philharmonic’s 2016-2017 season, makes her only appearance this season in a program that includes Weinberg’s Violin Concerto and Mahler’s Symphony #4. Gideon Kremer is the soloist for the violin concerto. The concert opens with Messiaen’s Un soirire.
JULIE BROWN’S THE HOMECOMING QUEEN’S GOT A GUN – THE MUSICAL – Cavern Club
October 20-October 21
If you recall this crazy little song you’ll be familiar with the line “Thrown down the tiara and get off the float.” Performed by Julie Brown (not the former MTV veejay), this is the final weekend of her musical inspired by her song. Expect some craziness as only Julie Brown can provide. The Cavern Club is downstairs at Casita Del Campo restaurant on Hyperion in Silver Lake where the margaritas can make any day better.
FEATHERS OF FIRE – The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts
October 20-October 29
How often do you get a chance to see a shadow play based on a 10th century Persian epic? In this production puppets, costumes, masks, digital animation and more are used to tell the story of two star-crossed lovers who overcome incredible odds.
LAST CHANCE: Simply put, if you can see “Head of Passes” before it closes on Sunday you should. This is the performance of a lifetime by Phylicia Rashad.
