The legendary jazz vocalist and lyricist Jon Hendricks passed away last week. He is best known for creating a style of singing called “Vocalese.”

Vocalese is defined as “a style of singing in which singers put words to jazz tunes especially to previously improvised instrumental solos.”

He was a founding member of the group Lambert, Hendricks & Ross.

To celebrate this incredibly talented man, I’ve put together a few videos that showcase his work and his influence.

Lambert, Hendricks & Ross With the Count Basie Orchestra – “Avenue C”

Lambert, Hendricks & Ross – “Doodlin'”

Mel Tormé and Jon Hendricks – “Down for Double”

Jon Hendricks and The Manhattan Transfer – “Aerigin”

Jon Hendricks (featuring Wynton Marsalis) – “Gimme that Wine”
