As part of the celebration of the Academy Awards 90th year, the Academy has joined forces with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for, The Oscar® Concert, an evening of music from films on Wednesday, February 28th.
UPDATE: The following people have been added to the concert as special guests: Michael Abels, Paul Thomas Anderson, Carter Burwell, Guillermo Del Toro, Alexandre Desplat, Ava DuVernay, Rian Johnson, A.r. Rahman, Michelle Rodriguez, Daniela Vega, John Williams and Hans Zimmer.
The first half of the program will be themed suites that showcase different types of music. For example “The Sound of the Chase” or “The Sound of Love.” Amongst the composers whose work will be included in the five various suites are Erich Wolfgang Korngold (The Adventures of Robin Hood), Tan Dun (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Rachel Portman (Nicholas Nikelby) and Quincy Jones (In Cold Blood.) Joining the LA Philharmonic is jazz musician Terence Blanchard.
The second half will include suites from the five composers who are nominated for the Oscar for their scores:
Carter Burwell – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Alexandre Desplat – The Shape of Water
Johnny Greenwod – The Phantom Thread
John Wiliams – Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Hans Zimmer – Dunkirk
Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino starts the show with both a demonstration of how scoring works and a suite of music from Up. Thomas Wilkins conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
