Jazz vocalist Gabrielli Stravelli has already made a name for herself on the East Coast. When she performs at Upstairs at Vitello’s on Thursday night she will be making her West Coast Debut. She moves on to Oakland’s The Sound Room on Friday night.

Her most recent record, Dream Ago, includes not just covers of classic songs like “It Might As Well Be Spring” by Rodgers & Hammerstein and Cole Porter’s “Dream Dancing,” but Ms. Stravelli also includes original songs. Amongst those songs is “Cake of My Childhood.”

When Stephen Holden of the New York Times reviewed her show at Feinstein’s/54 Below in 2015 he said, “Ms. Stravelli’s emotional intelligence coincides with a phenomenal voice that she wielded with an easygoing confidence and impeccable taste.”

It’s always worth discovering someone who is clearly influenced by some of the great jazz singers of the past. Gabrielle Stravelli strikes me as someone who can help bring jazz vocals into the future without ever forgetting the legacy of the past. Now we here on the West Coast get our first chance to experience her.
