In Karen Zacarías’s Native Gardens, which just started its West Coast debut over the weekend at The Old Globe in San Diego, the delineation of the property line between two couples is the reason for the battle between longtime residents Virginia and Frank and their new neighbors Pablo and Tania. It’s a battle that raises issues of taste, class and race.

Starring as the two couples are Peri Gilpin and Mark Pinter as Virginia and Frank. Eddie Martinez plays Pablo with Kimberli Flores as Tania. Edward Torres directs. Native Gardens sounds a little similar to the basic concept of God of Carnage as they both share two couples battling. Hopefully it is much smarter in its execution than Yasmina Reza’s inexplicably popular play.
