If That’s Your Boyfriend (He Wasn’t Last Night) and Plantation Lullabies are just two of the best known titles associated with Meshell Ndegeocello. The singer, songwriter, rapper, bassist has long been one of the most fascinating artists to watch. Her most recent album, Ventriloquism, was released earlier this year. On Wednesday night she will be joined by guitarist Jeff Parker for an intimate show at the bluewhale in Little Tokyo. There will only be one set at 9:00 PM.
Ventriloquism is a recording much like David Bowie’s Pin-Ups – it celebrates songs by artists who have inspired Ndegeocello. She makes each and every song her own. As she says in an article on NPR’s website, “I looked for a way to make something that was light while things around me were so dark, a musical place to go that reminded me of another, brighter time.”
If you’ve never been to the bluewhale, you’ll find a truly intimate venue where the music is the reason for being in the room. This show represents a very rare opportunity to see Ndegeocello up close and personal…just like her new album.
