In 2012, illusionists Derek DelGaudio and Helder Guimarães had a hit at the Geffen Playhouse with their show Nothing to Hide. DelGaudio returned with a couple solo shows at the Geffen and now it is Guimarães’s turn. Invisible Tango, his new solo show, officially opens this week at the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theatre at the Geffen Playhouse. Demand for the show was so high that even before opening it was extended and now runs through July 21st.
In Invisible Tango Guimarães explores what’s real and what isn’t and challenges us to not fear the things that we can’t control. The show is directed by Frank Marshall. He’s best known as the producer behind such films as Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Sixth Sense, Seabiscuit and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
In early 2016 Guimarães performed a show entitled Borrowed Time here in Los Angeles. That show took place in a secret location that was only revealed to attendees on the day of the performance. It was kept secret. Guimarães followed Borrowed Time with the show Verso off-Broadway later that same year.
Recording artist Moby wrote the music for Invisible Tango. He first came to prominence with the 1991 single, Go. His best-selling album in the United States is 1999’s Play. He is also the owner of the vegan restaurant Little Pine in Silver Lake.
The promo above shows sleight-of-hand work with cards. But having seen him perform several times at the Magic Castle (where he won multiple awards), his strength is not just in the illusions themselves, but in his approach to storytelling and the way he frames the illusions. He was named a World Champion of Magic at FISM – which is the Olympics of magic.
Invisible Tango is an 80-minute show with no intermission. There is a notice on the theatre’s website that no one under the age of 12 will be admitted to the production.
Multiple performances are already sold out.
