If you only know Ty Taylor as the energetic and charismatic leader of Vintage Trouble, you only know one side of him. Long before that band came into being, I experienced him in a number of shows at Rockwell Table and Stage that showcased another side of this R&B/Rock singer. You can have the chance to hear Taylor approach very different material on Wednesday night when he performs songs from his latest album, Nouveau Mid-Century Romance Songbook at Feinstein’s at Vitello’s in Studio City.
Each song on this album is his approach to creating new songs that would feel both contemporary and like they stepped out of the traditions of the Great American Songbook. Titles like Skies No More Be Gray, Wished for a Kiss, Next Day You’re the Fool sound like titles of songs written by Cole Porter, George Gershwin or Johnny Mercer. But they are all new songs.
Taylor recorded these songs over a two-day period with drummer Robert Perkins and pianist Peter Smith. They were joined by additional musicians and a couple of guest vocalists (Renée Elise Goldberry and Maiya Sykes.)
Taylor is a superb singer and the opportunity to hear these songs sung like in the intimate space at Feinstein’s at Vitello’s is one no fan of great songwriting and singing should miss.
But if you like your music more rock and R&B, Vintage Trouble goes out on the road again later this year and they have a show booked at the El Rey on December 13th.
