Screening this week at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center is National Theatre Live’s presentation of Shakespeare’s Antony & Cleopatra starring Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo. The screening takes place on Sunday, November 10th at 2:00 PM.
Mark Antony (Fiennes) and Cleopatra (Okonedo) have fallen in love. With Julius Caesar and his assassins dead, Antony is ruling Rome. But the city remains divided by war and this love affair could not come at a worse time for both the citizens of Rome and the two fated lovers.
This production played at the Olivier Theatre in London from September 2018 to January 2019 where it earned rave reviews. Simon Goodwin was the director.
Antony & Cleopatra runs approximately 3-1/2 hours which includes the intermission.
I saw Fiennes as Hamlet on Broadway and consider it to be the best and most dangerous performance of that part I’ve ever seen. He won the Tony Award for that performance. Okonedo won a Tony Award for her performance in the 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun.
The opportunity to watch these two actors in these roles should be a no-brainer for anyone who loves Shakespeare and great acting.
