When is a film screening more than just a film screening? In the case of this weekend’s live-to-film concert of the Disney Pixar film, Coco, it is when an all-star cast is assembled to perform live on the stage at the Hollywood Bowl.  These concerts take place Friday and Saturday night.

Coco is, of course, the Oscar-winning animated feature film directed by Lee Unkrich. It tells the story of a young boy who loves music and worshiped a popular singer, only to realize that the singer isn’t quite the person he thought he was. His family, however, wasn’t so supportive of his passion for music. A freak accident occurs and he suddenly finds himself in the land where those who have passed away live and he has to find his way back home before he, too, becomes one of the dead.

The film will be projected onto the shell of the Hollywood Bowl.

In addition to winning the Best Animated Feature Film Academy Award, songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez won an Oscar for their song, Remember Me.

Miguel, who appears in the music video for Remember Me, is amongst the company performing this weekend. The rest of the ensemble includes Benjamin Bratt (the voice of Ernesto de la Cruz in the film), Eva Longoria, Jaime Camil (the voice of Papá), Alex Gonzalez, Natalia Jimenez, Rudy Mancuso, Lele Pons, Carlos Rivera and Alanna Ubach (the voice of Mamá Imelda).

The performances will also include a full orchestra playing the score by Michael Giacchino. Mariachi Divas will entertain throughout the night as well. Directing the production is Oscar-nominated production designer Felipe Fernandez del Paso.

The producers are suggesting that attendees wear Day of the Dead costumes.

As this is a lease event at the Hollywood Bowl, there are restrictions on what you can bring with you. they are as follows:

  • Alcohol and controlled substances are not permitted. You can purchase alcohol once you’re inside. Or you can bring factory-sealed plastic bottles with non-alcoholic beverages – as long as they’re one liter or less.
  • Glass (including drinking glasses) and aluminum cans aren’t permitted, regardless of content.
  • Reusable liquid containers (such as Camelbak or Nalgene bottles) need to stay at home, too.
