Julia Migenes took the world by storm in the film version of Carmen. The 1984 film version of Bizet’s opera allowed Migenes to show off one side of her richly diverse talent. She’s also quite adept at more subtle and gentle material. Those skills are on display now in La Vie en Rose, which has been extended through April 11th.
If you’ve never had a chance to experience Migenes, this may be your last chance. Press materials for the show indicate these are her farewell concert performances.
La Vie en Rose finds Migenes performing eleven songs by such songwriters as Jacques Brel, Michel Legrand, Charles Aznavour and more. She is accompanied on piano by Victoria Kirsch.
The show is directed by Peter Medak, a filmmaker best known for The Ruling Class and The Krays. He and Migenes were married from 1988-2003.
I had the privilege of working with Migenes on an ill-fated film version of The Threepenny Opera. She played “Jenny Diver” in the film opposite the late Raúl Julía. Not only is she amazingly talented, she is a totally delightful, charming and funny woman.
All of this means that to have her bid adieu to concert performances gives La Vie en Rose added importance. If you’ve never seen her live, please go. If you have, this is your last chance to see her one more time.
