St. Louis’ Muny Theatre begins a new series tonight called Muny Magic In Your Home with a concert by Tony Award-winning actress, Beth Leavel. The concert airs twice beginning at 9:15 PM EDT/6:15 PDT tonight with an encore showing on Thursday at the same time. You can watch the concert here.
Leavel began her Broadway career when she joined the long-running 42 Street in the 1980s. She subsequently joined the productions of Crazy for You and Showboat.
The first roles she originated were as “Mabel” and “Mrs. Bixby” in The Civil War. She followed that by joining the revival of 42nd Street in a much more significant role in 2002. Her next part was in the smash musical Mamma Mia!
Her real breakthrough came when she played the title character in the hit musical The Drowsy Chaperone. The show was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won five – including one for Leavel as Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
After joining Young Frankenstein, she created the roles of “Emily” in Elf and “Florence Greenberg” in Baby It’s You. She received a Tony nomination for Baby It’s You.
She originated the role of “Mrs. June Adams” in Bandstand and most recently starred as “Dee Dee Allen” in The Prom, earning another Tony nomination.
Leavel is a supremely talented performer and this show should be quite entertaining. After all, she’s just a Broadway Baby.
