To close out the year I’m posting videos from the top 12 interviews from 2024. These were a mix of my personal favorites, some of your favorites and a few that may have slipped under the radar. Today we enter the top 3. I continue with #3: TIMO ANDRES.
Timo (pronounced Tim-O for those who are curious) Andres is a composer and pianist. Last spring he had the world premiere of his new piano concerto, Made of Tunes with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The piece was written for and performed by Aaron Diehl. That was on the same day that Nonesuch Records released the album The Blind Banister, a recording of his third piano concerto. Just three days earlier he was one of five pianists to perform Philip Glass’ Etudes 1-20 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
How’s that for a trifecta? Which was precisely the reason I wanted to talk to Andres about all three projects and what he might have in store in the future. Though Andres admitted it was a cliche to let the music speak for itself, he did admit to me:
“Listen to the music. If you’re curious, it’s all in there. I don’t think it says particularly anything autobiographical. I’m not that kind of composer. But, I think you can connect the dots if you really listen.”
Here is my interview with Timo Andres:
