Charles Busch’s off-Broadway smash play Die, Mommie, Die! has been performed all over the world. It was also made into a feature film starring the playwright in the dual roles of Angela Arden and Barbara Arden. As part of Center Theatre Group’s Block Party, the Celebration Theatre production of Die, Mommie, Die! closes out this year’s block party with performances beginning on Thursday. Drew Droege handles the lead role.

In Die, Mommie, Die! a nearly forgotten and aging star, Angela Arden (Droege), murders her husband so she can be with a much younger man. This doesn’t sit well with her children who plot their revenge on Arden. The more you know about classic 1950s women’s film, Hollywood kitsch and certain classic Greek dramas, the better. But it’s not necessary to enjoy Die, Mommie, Die!

Droege, perhaps best known for his impersonation of Chloe Sevigny, just had a smash off-Broadway hit with a show he wrote and starred in called Bright Colors and Bold Patterns. The play was produced by Michael Urie. Local audiences might remember he was part of the Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Devil Wears Prada at Rockwell in the role of Miranda Priestly.

The production is offering up close and personal seats, but they do come with a warning:

There’s also a special Mother’s Day tea/show combination. So depending on how you feel about your mom…….
