Finding one’s tribe is always a challenge. It is probably made more difficult if you find yourself living in a place like Manitoba, Canada where beer and hockey are the two pillars of daily life. So if that isn’t necessarily your tribe, what are you to do? That is the set-up for The Canadians, a new play by Adam Bock, having its world premiere at the Julianne Agyros Stage at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa.
Gordy (Kyle T. Hester) finds himself given an opportunity to explore life outside Manitoba when his best friend, Brendan (Daniel Chung) wins two tickets to a gay cruise. Who they meet and the realizations they make constitute both the humor and the drama in Bock’s play.
Like any good fish-out-of-water story, they meet interesting people on the cruise. The cast also features Corey Brill, Corey Dorris and Linda Gheringer – all playing multiple parts.
Amongst Bock’s other plays are Before the Meeting, A Life, A Small Fire, The Receptionist, The Drunken City, The Thugs and Swimming in the Shallows.
Jaime Castañeda, who has been closely affiliated with both the La Jolla Playhouse and the Atlantic Theatre Company in New York, directs.
Due to adult language and sexuality, The Canadians is recommended for high school age audiences and above.
The play has a running time of 80 minutes with no intermission. The Canadians will continue through October 20th.
