When Stephen Sondheim,Burt Shevelove and Larry Gilbert wrote A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, I doubt any of these gentlemen knew how much that title would inspire others. The most recent example is the play opening this week at the Geffen Playhouse. It is titled: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center of New York City
The show, written by Halley Feiffer (who also appears in the production), received great reviews when it opened in New York. How it fit on any marquee I’ll never know. In short, two people (Feiffer) and Jason Butler Harner (recently of Ozark on Netflix) are visiting their mothers (Eileen T’Kaye and JoBeth Williams) who share a hospital room. Over the course of the play it appears they fall for each other, hate each other, like each other, fall back in love for each other and generally ride the roller coaster that being in a hospital usually is.
Trip Cullman directs the production which runs until October 8th.
