Usually as the summer gets underway, I post the ten Hollywood Bowl Concerts not to miss. But this is quite a good year for concerts at Los Angeles’ beloved outdoor venue. So this year it is 12 Hollywood Bowl Concerts Not to Miss.

Here are the twelve concerts I think warrant a journey to the Hollywood Bowl this summer:

JULY FOURTH FIREWORKS SPECTACULAR WITH HARRY CONNICK, JR. – July 2nd – July 4th

If you’ve never experienced a fireworks show at the Hollywood Bowl, you clearly don’t know what you’re missing. This year’s headliner for the annual July 4th concerts is Harry Connick, Jr.

His most recent album centered on songs of faith, but I would expect this concert to focus more on the material he’s best known for which are jazz standards and songs from the Great American Songbook.

Thomas Wilkins leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in these three concerts.

For tickets and more information, please go here.

For those not in the Los Angeles area, he’ll be performing at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park in San Diego on July 6th; Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA on July 9th and 10th and at Chateau Ste.
Who could ask for anything more than pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, opera’s Isabel Leonard and Broadway star Tony Yazbeck in an evening of songs and music by George Gershwin?

The program opens with the Cuban Overture and is then followed by Variations on “I Got Rhythm.“ Leonard and Yazbeck conclude the first half with selections of Gershwin’s songs.

The second act features Thibaudet playined Rhapsody in Blue and closes with An American In Paris.

MAESTRO OF THE MOVIES: THE MUSIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS AND MORE – July 12th – July 14th

This annual celebration of all things John Williams will be a little different. Yes, Williams curated the program utilizing his own music and many classic scores he loves from the Golden Age, but he will not be appearing this year.

Williams had to cancel all upcoming appearances due to a health issue “from which he is expected to make a full recovery.” Does that mean light sabers won’t be at the ready for the inevitable selections of music from Star Wars? Of course not.

David Newman, who regularly conducts the first half of these concerts each year, will be conducting the full program.

BIG BAND NIGHT – July 17th

If you love large ensemble jazz music, this concert is for you. The evening opens with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra (who have made countless appearances at the Hollywood Bowl).

Next up is The Count Basie Orchestra who will feature vocalist Nnenna Freelon.

The headliner is the Maria Schneider Orchestra which is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Earlier this year Maria Schneider released a 3-lp vinyl box set entitled Decades. You can’t stream that recording, you can only get it here. But you can hear this incredible artist and her musicians live. This is her only US appearance until September.

STRAVINSKY & KHACHATURIAN – July 30th

I’ve written before how Aram Khachaturian’s music isn’t performed often enough. As they did in the Walt Disney Concert Hall this season, the LA Philharmonic is breathing new life into his work in this program that features the composer’s Violin Concerto and the Spartacus Suite No. 2. Martin Chalifour is the soloist for the concerto.

The concert closes with the 1919 version of Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite. Kevin John Edusei conducts.

PROKOFIEV & SHOSTAKOVICH – August 6th

One of my top five piano concerti of the entire repertoire is being performed by Denis Kozhukhin in this concert. It is Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26. (My favorite recording of it is by Martha Argerich.)

The second half of the program is Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. The work was completed the same year that Joseph Stalin died and is widely interpreted as the composer’s commentary on the brutality of the Soviet government during Stalin’s reign. It’s a big and powerful symphony.

Ryan Bancroft leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

HERBIE HANCOCK HEAD HUNTERS 50th – August 14th

Where were you on October 26, 1973? Maybe you remember the release of Herbie Hancock’s Head Hunters which is considered amongst the best jazz-fusion/jazz-funk albums of all time.

Watermelon Man may not be a title recognize, but I guarantee you the music has burrowed its way into your soul.

This is the ONLY reunion of Hancock with the surviving members of that record: drummer Harvey Mason; saxophonist Bennie Maupin and percussionist Bill Summers. Playing bass is Marcus Miller as original bassist Paul Jackson passed away in 2021.

The original four-track album runs less than 45 minutes. Which means there will be a whole lot more music performed by Hancock and his bandmates.

SARA BAREILLES WITH THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL ORCHESTRA – August 17th

What at one point years ago might have seemed like a pop concert, is now pure heaven for musical theater lovers. Sara Bareilles is a three-time Tony Award nominee having received two nominations for Best Original Score (Waitress in 2016 and SpongeBob SquarePants in 2018) and for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for the 2023 revival of Into the Woods.

Of course, she’ll perform music from throughout her career and this is her only concert on her schedule until late September.

But wait, there’s more. Tony Award winner Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton) will open the show.

Thomas Wilkins conducts the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

THE RITE OF SPRING – August 22nd

The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky is one of classical music’s most important and enduring works. Hearing this monumental work outside is reason enough to see this concert. But fans of Stravinsky’s music are in for a full evening of his genius.

Teddy Abrams, Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra, conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a concert that opens with Stravinsky’s arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner. His Circus Polka follows and the first half closes with Leila Josefowicz performing his Violin Concerto. Then the main attraction is on tap for the second half of the program.

The soloists for this concert are bass Dashon Burton; mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey; tenor Anthony León; countertenor Key’mon Murrah and soprano Hera Kyesang Park. The Los Angeles Master Chorale also performs.

The two will perform selected arias and duets.

The concert opens with Verdi’s Overture to I vespri sicilliani which is followed by the ever-popular Intermezzo from Cavalleria rusticana by Mascagni. Respighi’s Pines of Rome closes the concert.

This weekend a summer tradition at the Hollywood Bowl continues with Maestro of the Movies: John Williams from September 2nd – 4th. When I first started attending these concerts Williams would conduct the entire performance. He’s now 90 years old. More recently he’s come on to conduct the last two or three pieces of each concert. (One of them inspiring light sabers to illuminate the Bowl as they do every year.)

Video by Charles Landy

David Newman will conduct the bulk of the concert. He’s long been a fan of Williams and his work. (You can see my interview with him from a few years ago when he was conducting the score to Jaws live to film at the Bowl.)

This got me thinking about the one time I interviewed John Williams.

In the fall of 1996, I was hired to produce a celebration of the re-release of the original Star Wars trilogy. The show, Star Wars: The Magic & The Mystery, was being produced for the Fox Network. Amongst my responsibilities was getting as many participants in those films to do new interviews about the trilogy and the way those stories and characters entered the zeitgeist in a way that was previously unfathomable.

I was able to confirm that Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, James Earl Jones plus filmmakers George Lucas and Irvin Kershner would participate. But the interview that had me most personally excited was with composer John Williams.

“Close Encounters of the Third Kind” vinyl signed by John Williams

His music was one of the many diverse soundtracks of my youth. In the years since Star Wars was released, I had become an enormous fan of his scores for Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Fury, Superman, Dracula, 1941, The Witches of Eastwick, Empire of the Sun, JFK and many more.

If I had my way I would have spoken to John Williams for hours about these and many other scores. But my job was to talk to him about just the original trilogy of Star Wars films. I liked Star Wars, but I didn’t appreciate the film as much upon its initial release as I did much later. But I loved the music.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. By this point I had interviewed a number of composers and they ranged from lovable mensches to cantankerous curmudgeons. Which one would John Williams be?

Of course he was a perfect gentleman. Modest, humble and gracious.

Over the course of the hour we spent together he told me about Steven Spielberg having recommended Williams to George Lucas. He was still amazed at how successful the records of the scores were. He considered the music in the cantina scene to “stick out entirely as an unrelated rib to the score.” He discussed recording a short finale for Return of the Jedi due to the addition of the Ewoks celebration. (In fact, he mentioned that Lucas was dubbing that music into the final reel of the reissue at the time of our interview.)

It was at the end of the interview that I asked Mr. Williams about if he would be scoring the upcoming new films (that became the first three chapters in the series.) This shows the depths of his modesty.

“Oh, I very much hope I can do the new trilogy, or as much of it as I’m granted the energy and the time to do – I would welcome the opportunity and hope I will be able to. And I would look forward to it and I hope that happens.”

I responded, “Has there been a conversation about it?”

To which he responded, “Well George is – yes, we talk about it all the time. It’s more in the area of George threatening to say, you know, I’m going to get these three things done so get ready. So the conversation is kind of on that level, and he knows I’m ready and willing and hopefully able and certainly keen to do it.”

The rest as they say…is history.

If you look back at the list of scores I named at the beginning of this story, you’ll notice it isn’t filled with the usual titles (any of the Star Wars films, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Schindler’s List, any of the Harry Potter films, Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark.)

That’s not to show disdain for those scores. The John Williams I admire most is the man who writes the score for John Singleton’s Rosewood. And The Reivers. And the man who recently told Gustavo Dudamel* (Music and Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic) that he still wants to write a piano concerto. But John Williams is arguably the “people’s composer.” His enormous success and popularity has proven that over and over again.

“I’m not a particularly religious person,” he told me that day, “but there’s something sort of eerie, about the way our hands are occasionally guided in some of the things that we do. It can happen in any aspect, any phase of human endeavor where we come to the right solutions almost in spite of ourselves. And you look back and you say that that almost seems to have been a kind of – you want to use the word divine guidance – behind it. It can make you believe in miracles in any collaborative art form: the theatre, film, any of this, when all these aspects come together to form a humming engine that works and the audience is there for it and they’re ready for it and willing to embrace it. That is a kind of miracle also.”

So if the opening credits for Star Wars are an inevitable part of each Labor Day celebration, so be it. I’m just glad we get another opportunity to watch Mr. Williams once again ascend the podium, pick up his baton and take us to a galaxy far, far away. May he continue to do so for as long as he wants to.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic opens their season on September 27th with a gala called John Williams Celebration.

You would have to be living under a rock to not have been aware that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the landing on the moon. The Los Angeles Philharmonic celebrates this semi-centennial with a concert on Thursday at the Hollywood Bowl called America in Space.

Film composer David Newman leads the LA Phil in a program that combines classical music with film scores and a west coast premiere.

I doubt you could do a show like this without performing some or all of Gustav Holst’s The Planets. The powers that be agreed and this concert will open with Mars and close with Jupiter from Holst’s best-known work. Another classical work on the program is Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man.

Penka Kouneva’s work from The Women Astronauts will also be performed.

The West Coast Premiere is of Advent by film composer Michael Giacchino (Oscar-winner for his score to Pixar’s Up.)

The other film music includes selections from Hidden Figures (score by Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams & Benjamin Wallfisch), selections from James Horner’s score for Apollo 13; Harry Gregson-Williams’s score for The Martian and Steven Price’s score for Gravity.

My personal favorite of the film score selections will be a performance of music written by Oscar-winner Justin Hurwitz for First Man. This is perhaps the best fit for this program as Damien Chazelle’s film specifically told the story of Neil Armstrong and how he became that first man to walk on the moon. Though his score was much-heralded, it inexplicably did not garner an Oscar nomination.

Here is your best bet this weekend in LA (8/31-9/2):

With a three-day weekend, it’s good that the LA Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl are offering up three opportunities to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of John Williams at the venue. The concerts begin tonight and run through Sunday.

Williams, who is 86, will be conducing the second half of the program. David Newman, who has conducted Williams’ scores for Jaws, and two Star Wars movies earlier this season, will be on the podium for the first half. Steven Spielberg will be joining for all three nights as well.

That is fitting as Williams has scored countless movies for him. Their collaboration goes back to 1974’s The Sugarland Express and includes such films as 1941, Always, Hook, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, War Horse and Lincoln. (You know the big movies, why list them again?)

Amongst the other directors for whom Williams has written scores are Mark Rydell, Robert Altman, Alfred Hitchcock, Brian De Palma, George Miller, Oliver Stone and some guy named Lucas.

If you attend any one of these concerts and are so-inclined, you might want to bring a light saber. I assure you that when the inevitable piece or pieces from any of the Star Wars films get performed, there will be hundreds of light sabres lighting up the Bowl.

Today it was announced that Williams and his wife, Samantha, have made a contribution to the LA Philharmonic’s Centennial Campaign. So as he celebrates his 40th anniversary, he’s also giving back.

Congratulations Mr. Williams on 40 years at the Hollywood Bowl.

This weekend will be a special one for fans of the music of John Williams. The prolific and multiple Academy Award-winning composer will be celebrating 40 years of conducting at the Hollywood Bowl with three concerts beginning Friday night. David Newman will be leading the LA Philharmonic in the first half of the program. Then Williams himself will be conducting the second half. And if that isn’t enough, Steven Spielberg will also be on hand to help celebrate his go-to composer.

We thought it would be appropriate to ask several artists about their memories about Williams, his appearances at the Bowl and his scores.

David Newman (Photo by Alan Weissman)

David Newman – composer/conductor

“I would say that John Williams along with Jerry Goldsmith, really lead the latter half of [film scoring] in the 20th century and John into the 21st century. Aside from his gigantic contribution to film music with Spielberg, Lucas and these event films starting with Jaws, Star Wars, E.T., Indiana Jones movies and the Jurassic movies, this other part of his life of making film music part of the conversation in the high arts in Western concert music makes John Williams an ambassador.”

“He’s our Mozart. He’s the composer they should make busts of and put on music teachers’ pianos. He’s writing music in the most sophisticated of forms for film – which is our highest synthesis of art as a civilization now and he does it the best.
“I’ve always been listening to film music. The first time you heard Star Wars or E.T., it’s like wow! What is that? It’s something that makes an impression. I saw him do an opening night [concert] at the Bowl. One of the things he did was the Olympics Theme. It’s one of those things you never forget. He represents what music is in this country like Leonard Bernstein did.”

Lara Downes – Pianist

“He represents the sound of American movies. He’s that iconic sound of American movies. The part of that story that I really love is about [Aaron] Copland and [Leonard] Bernstein and this whole American thing we’ve made up out of thing air and we count on in some cultural way. When I hear a John Williams score, I also hear a [Erich Wolfgang] Korngold score and I think about where that music came from. And that’s really at the heart of American music. It’s music that comes from a tragic moment in world history, a migration and immigration, and people whose musical roots lay elsewhere and these roots came together in a unique way. John Williams is the next chapter in that.”

John Williams on revisiting his work

“Every time Brahms went to hear one of his symphonies played, he would go in the audience and listen to the symphony and the next day he would go to the Bibliotheque in Vienna, get the original score out and make changes – he never could leave it alone. Some sage said the a work of art is never finished, it’s only abandoned. That’s really true of all of us; it’s like one of our children. You never finish trying to groom it; the child could be 60 years old, and you’re still saying, “Well, you look better if you dress this way.” I think on the one hand don’t tamper with it, and on the other an artist can, should and, I think, must be excused for wanting to continue to improve his or her work.”

Here is Your Best Bet This Weekend in LA (8/10-8/12)

If you go to Randy Newman’s website and look under events for his concert schedule you will find exactly one concert on that schedule. So rarely does he perform that this Sunday’s concert at the Hollywood Bowl is a must-see for even the slightest fans of Newman’s work.

The evening is billed as an evening of songs from all of Newman’s studio albums. From his first album in 1968 (appropriately titled Randy Newman) through his most recent recording, Dark Matter (2017), Newman has written songs that will stand the test of time. His wit and emotion combine to comment on the subjects of the day, but they never seem like relics of a different era. Rather, he so smartly crafted his songs that they remain topical today and will continue to do so for generations to come.

To get an overview of his repertoire, check out my dream setlist I posted here yesterday. There are videos or audio clips of each of the songs I’ve selected. And the ones I didn’t choose are very familiar to most people:

“Mama Told Me Not To Come”

“Short People”

“It’s Money that I Love”

And of course, “I Love L.A.”

This concert will feature Newman with his band and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra conducted by his cousin, film composer David Newman.

From my point of view, this is the concert of this summer’s schedule at the Hollywood Bowl not to be missed. That makes it Your Best Bet This Weekend in LA.

Singer, songwriter and composer Randy Newman doesn’t do a lot of interviews. Absent my ability to speak to one of my heroes in music, I’ve decided to put together my dream setlist for his concert on Sunday night at the Hollywood Bowl. The show is called “The Albums 1968-2018” and is scheduled to include songs from each one of his studio albums.

Randy Newman (photo by Pamela Springsteen)

Since his cousin, David Newman, is conducting the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, let’s first get his thoughts on the concert. I had asked him about this when we spoke about his conducting Jaws earlier this season.

“It’s not the first time we’ve done this, it’s the second,” he said. “We did a concert in Vienna a couple of years ago. I have no idea what’s going on. I know that it will be songs from his albums – all of which I’m intimately familiar with. I’m so looking forward. I’m a huge fan of Randy’s from when I was 15-years-old. I’m honored and can’t wait to do that. That’s going to be fun. He’ll have his band there, a big orchestra. We’ll have a blast with that.”

Now my setlist.

Randy Newman (1968) From this introductory album I’ll have to take one of the songs he’s written that has been covered by a lot of artists, “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today.”

12 Songs (1970) No doubt he’ll be doing “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” but I’d love to hear “Uncle Bob’s Midnight Blues.”

Sail Away (1972) In our current political climate, there’s only one song that must be played and it is from this album: “Political Science.”

Good Old Boys (1974) Easily one of his songs that gets misunderstood – because he writes in character for the people in his stories – is “Rednecks.” No, he’s not a racist, the character in the song is. (Talking of misunderstood, have you seen the video for “I Love L.A.?”)

Little Criminals (1977) Since he had a hit with “Short People,” (another misunderstood song), he’ll feel obligated to play that song. And however much I like the idea of his playing “You Can’t Fool the Fat Man” for the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, I love his song “Baltimore” from this album and that would be my choice.

Born Again (1979) My choice here is “The Story of a Rock and Roll Band” (Which is a tribute to one of my favorite bands.) But you can probably count “It’s Money That I Love” to be played from Born Again.

Trouble in Paradise (1983) Do you really think he’ll not play “I Love L.A.” at this concert? You can bet on that one. However, I’d be happy if he played this entire album with my particular favorites being “Real Emotional Girl,” “Christmas in Cape Town” and “I’m Different.” But if push comes to shove, I think he should follow up “The Story of a Rock and Roll Band” with “My Life Is Good” from this album.

Land of Dreams (1988) Easily my favorite song here, and one of his many songs that can cut you to the quick with its pathos is “I Want You to Hurt Like I Do.” I’d love him to play that cheerful little ditty. My guess is he’ll play “Dixie Flyer.”

Faust (1994) He’s probably not including this concept album for an ill-fated musical (that was performed in La Jolla in 1995.) I saw the production and I love this album, but it is’t technically a “studio album.” My pick here is “Feels Like Home.” Bonnie Raitt sang this song so beautifully on the album, but Newman has performed it in concert and added it to one of his studio albums a few years later.

Bad Love (1999) I’ll go for “The Great Nations of Europe,” for two reasons. One, it is timely. Secondly, it utilizes an orchestra and will serve the concept of this show well.

Harps and Angels (2008) It’s amazing how many of his songs comment not just on what was going on at the time they were written and recorded, but still serve as commentary today. For that reason and also because this, too, can take advantage of the orchestra, I’ll choose “Laugh and Be Happy.” (This is the album where Newman released his version of “Feels Like Home.”)

Dark Matter (2017) Newman should collude with current events and play “Putin.”

Now, given that we have the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra for this concert, it would be great to hear from some of his film scores, too. While I’m sure Toy Story would be included if they are and perhaps The Natural, I’d love to hear some of his music from Avalon and Pleasantville. Those are two scores from little films that got away, but they showcase Newman at his best.

Randy Newman (Photo by Pamela Springsteen)

Speaking of Toy Story, you can probably count on hearing “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” even though it wasn’t part of his studio albums. The song is too beloved not to be somehow be included – perhaps as an encore.

Whatever Randy Newman chooses to do on Sunday night, I can’t wait to see what’s on his official setlist. What would you want to hear him perform?

When we recently spoke with Newman, he made it very clear how much he admired John Williams and his music. So it is no surprise that in addition to conducting Jaws a few weeks ago he is tackling these two scores.

You will have the chance to see A New Hope on Tuesday and Friday. You can see The Empire Strikes Back on Thursday and and Saturday. And if you have forgotten your lightsaber, they will be giving out a limited number of them at each performance.

It’s a slow weekend due, perhaps, to Comic-Con. So for those of you not making your way to San Diego, here are the 3 Shows You Need to See: This Weekend in LA (7/20-7/22)

David Newman (Photo by Alan Weissman)

Jaws in Concert – Hollywood Bowl

July 20-21

It’s the 40th anniversary of John Williams’ first appearance at the Hollywood Bowl and the celebrations begin this weekend with two nights of live music to film performances of his Oscar-winning score for Jaws. Film composer David Newman will be on the podium leading the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Steven Spielberg’s film will be shown as the orchestra performs that classic score live. Check out our interview with David Newman about Williams and this score.

Eugene Pack (creator of “Celebrity Autobiography)

Celebrity Autobiography – The Wallis

July 21st

Sometimes when celebrities write their autobiographies they have some pretty outlandish things to say. With this show those delicious morsels of absurdity are read aloud by a cast willing to make light of excerpts from books by everyone from Streisand to Oprah to Ricky Martin to Sylvester Stallone. The cast for the two performances this weekend is scheduled to include Laraine Newman, Jennifer Tilly, Steven Weber, Sheri Shepard and the show’s creator Eugene Pack.

Ellen McLaughlin

July 22

Rinde in the title of this show is Rinde Eckert. Eckert is a writer/composer/performer whose works include And God Created Great Whales. Ellen is Ellen McLaughlin who is a playwright and actress probably best known for originating the role of the angel in Tony Kushner’s Angels in America. Joining them will be poet Allison Joseph and film director and writer Edoardo Ponti. These four unique talents team up for an evening where all of their various disciplines will combine for a one-of-a-kind way of telling stories.

“Aside from his gigantic contribution to film music with Spielberg, Lucas and these events films starting with Jaws, Star Wars, E.T., the Indiana Jones movies and Jurassic Park, making film music part of the conversation in the high arts is an enormous contribution he’s made and is still making.” So says composer/conductor David Newman who will be conducting John Williams’ memorable score for Jaws on Friday and Saturday at the Hollywood Bowl.

David Newman (Photo by Alan Weissman)

Newman, composer of the scores for such films as War of the Roses and Heathers, is going to be spending a lot of time on the podium conducting the music of John Williams in multiple live music to film concerts at the Bowl: Star Wars: A New Hope, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and three nights celebrating the 40th anniversary of Williams at the Bowl. It’s a good thing he’s been around Williams throughout his life.

His father, Alfred Newman and his uncle, Lionel, were part of the music department at 20th Century Fox. Alfred scored such films as All About Eve and The Snake Pit; Lionel scored The Proud Ones and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. “Johnny Williams,” as he was known at the time, was a staff arranger at the studio early in his career. And David had a front row seat for it all.

“I got to hang out there when John and Lionel were there,” he says during a recent phone call. “It was fantastic. John was really good friends with Lionel and it was a really great relationship. For years John had an office at Fox. They worked like dogs. John has an unbelievable work ethic to this day. He writes every day. He’s an amazingly disciplined artist as well as a genius. It’s what a real musician appreciates.”

Not just a composer and conductor, but also a violinist, Newman knows a thing or two about being a musician working with Williams’s scores.

“I played on E.T. I played on 1941. I played on several other John films. I studied violin and conducting. I worked in the studios playing film music to make a living. I never thought of it as a career trajectory. I learned a lot about what it is to conduct film music and later in life writing film music and to try to conduct my own music and I think that John intuited a lot from his time in the Fox system.”

Jaws in Concert on July 20-21 at the Hollywood Bowl

By 1969 “Johnny” Williams became “John” Williams and it was six years later when Jaws was released and immediately became a blockbuster. Williams won his second Academy Award, his first for Best Original Score. (The previous win was for Best Adaption and Song Score for Fiddler on the Roof.) At this weekend’s concerts, Newman says there won’t be any real changes to the score to Jaws beyond the need to put an intermission into the performance.

“Once they get on the boat, that’s the intermission. The whole first act is landlocked and the second act is at sea. John adds some things here and there to make that transition seamless.”

What people remember most about the theme for Jaws is no doubt those two notes that go back and forth that open the film. Newman, who has been studying the score in advance of the performances, has a new appreciation for the music Williams composed.

A scene from “Jaws”

“Jaws is predicated on this minor second mode. It’s really a metaphor for the shark’s fin going back and forth – the way it moves through the water. It’s really ingenious. It starts the shark before anyone even knows the shark is there. It’s an interesting score – it has a lot of levels to it. It was the first modern event picture. It has a certain quality to it, ‘it’s a swashbuckler and we’re going to see and we’re men and none of our women are with us.’ It has this adventure quality and it’s fascinating. I just love it and working on it.”

For all of his praise for Williams compositional skills, what really thrills Newman is how Williams has shifted the conversation about the role of film music.

“For me, in terms of what’s happening now with live music to film, this contribution that John made to this phenomenon is really unique. John started conducting the Boston Pops in 1980. When you stood up in front of the Boston Symphony or LA Philharmonic in 1980 to do film music there was a lot of resistance to it, based on basically nothing. There was no study of the music as an art form or any of that intellectual capital. To be fair, film music has always been difficult to study because it is very hard to get your hands on the scores and any extant material because a film studio owns it. Even so, to dismiss it out of hand the way the symphonic and the higher arts communities did was, I think, ill-advised and unfounded. I think John Williams, little by little, whittled away at this to where we are now where these live orchestra film events are ubiquitous.”

Newman will be sharing the Bowl stage with Williams during the three-night celebration in late August and early September. Given his long history with the composer, does he feel an extra responsibility picking up the baton for all these concerts?

“I always feel responsibility for anything I do artistically because that’s the nature of growing up and practicing and trying to be a musician and all of that. I feel almost joyous being a part of it. I’m so happy that this music can actually be heard and vetted and not dismissed categorically. Now you can hear it and see how it works and make a judgement for yourself. Just as you would do any ballet, opera or symphonic work. You have to think of all the thousands of works written when Mozart and Beethoven were alive in Vienna and were vetted and didn’t make it. That’s, to a certain degree, what film music is going through now. On a personal note, I’m honored to do it. I understand what my place is in this world. So I’m happy to advocate for it.”
