Broadway has always had power couples. Acting couple Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne were once so popular that there is a theatre named after them in New York. Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon were recently the subject of the award-winning Fosse/Verdon on FX. You can add to that list Orfeh and Andy Karl.

Orfeh made her Broadway debut as an understudy in Footloose. She went on to play the role of Annette in the Broadway musical version of Saturday Night Fever. In 2000, Andy Karl joined the show to replace Sean Palmer as Joey. It was there that he and Orfeh fell in love.

She went on to appear in Legally Blonde: The Musical. He appeared in that show as well as RockyOn the Twentieth CenturyGroundhog Day and they both appeared in Pretty Woman: The Musical.

Orfeh and Andy Karl have two shows this week at Feinstein’s at Vitello’s. They will be celebrating their recording and 2017 show Legally Bound which finds them doing duets and taking turns on such songs as Ain’t No Mountain High EnoughI’m Your Baby Tonight and Kiss. There are also songs from their Broadway shows.

Orfeh and Karl are bonafide Broadway stars, but they also know how to rock. Expect a combination of styles if you attend these shows on Tuesday or Wednesday at Feinstein’s.

For those of you in San Francisco, they will be performing at Feinstein’s At the Nikko on Friday and Saturday.

Like many a Tony Awards winner, Frances Ruffelle’s name is not necessarily instantly recognizable. But her voice is. For anyone who has listened to the original recording of Les Miserables, they will know that she is not just the woman who originated the role of Eponine in the musical, she is the definitive voice of the character. Ruffelle will bring her one-woman show, Frances Ruffelle Live(s) in New York to Rockwell Table and Stage on October 6th.

Don’t expect a standard cabaret show. That isn’t what she does. She assembles songs and stories around a given narrative. If you are expecting a review of her career and the songs that go with those shows, you’ll be disappointed. But if you’re looking for strong singing and a an equal strong story, Live(s) in New York is for you.

We will have an interview with Ruffelle soon. Be sure to check back here to read what she has to say about her approach to these performances.

On October 20th she will continue her residency at The Green Room 42 in New York.

Singer/songwriter Spencer Day concludes his three-month residency at Rockwell Table & Stage in Los Feliz with a concert on Sunday, June 16th.  Once a month Day has been offering up selections from his albums and material he’s been working up for a new album featuring music from the stage.

Broadway By Day is the name of this album and, while he’s in Los Angeles, Day will return to the recording studio to finish a few more songs for it. I caught one of his shows in New York this spring and he offered up inspired takes on songs from EvitaSouth Pacific and more.

Like many artists in the music business these days, crowd-funding is one significant way of being able to finance the recording of new material (unless, of course, you are Beyoncé). The webpage for that effort references songs from A Chorus Line  and Hello, Dolly! as part of the planned song selection. I’m betting he doesn’t choose to do the big hit song from Godspell. “Day by Day” by Day would be too much, even if it sounds like the lyrics themselves.

Day’s most recent album was Angel City, a series of songs about Los Angeles. He had a hit with the song “72 and Sunny.” And while the current heatwave we’re having makes me dream of a milder day, there is a new Chill Remix version of the song that was released late last month.

My personal favorite from that album is “Chateau Marmont.”

If you are in the San Francisco area, Spencer Day has two shows at Feinstein’s at The Nikko on Friday and Saturday night before he arrives in Los Angeles. Those two shows may be sold out as the website no longer has tickets for sale. It does indicate that tickets may be available directly at the venue. Best to call to check.

If you live in the New York area, Day also has a show at Green Room 42 on June 21st.
