Rebecca Luker and Danny Burstein

When Broadway star Rebecca Luker passed away last December of complications from A.L.S. (commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), colleagues and journalists struggled to find enough superlatives to describe her incredible talent.

The New York Times hailed her “crystal clear operatic soprano.” Playbill recalled her “innate warmth, infectious joy, and gorgeous voice.” Broadway’s Laura Benanti called her “humble, loving and kind. So much so that you would sometimes forget her otherworldly talent, until she would sing, and her golden voice would wrap you in peace.” And Kristin Chenoweth, who called Luker an inspiration described her voice as “soprano heaven. I love you, Rebecca.”

On Tuesday, May 4th, Becca, a streaming show of music and stories from her three-decade career will take place at 7:30 PM ET/4:30 PM PT. The event is a fundraiser for Target ALS with all proceeds going to ALS research.

Participating in the concert will be Benanti, Sierra Boggess, Michael Cerveris, Chenoweth, Victoria Clark , Santino Fontana (they appeared in Cinderella together), Judy Kuhn, Howard McGillin, Norm Lewis, Kelli O’Hara, Tam Mutu and Sally Wilfert.

Wilfert and Luker recorded All the Girls, an album of songs about women and their friends, that was released late last year.

Luker originated the role of “Lily” in the musical The Secret Garden.

The show’s composer, Lucy Simon, is acting as honorary producer for this event. Frank DiLella, who hosts On Stage for Spectrum News in New York, will serve as the host. Mary-Mitchell Campbell and Joseph Thalken serve as co-music directors.

Luker was nominated for three Tony Awards: Best Actress in a Musical for her roles as “Magnolia” in the 1994 revival of Show Boat and as “Marian Paroo” in the 2000 revival of The Music Man and for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins.

Her other Broadway credits included The Phantom of the Opera, The Sound of Music, Nine and Fun Home.

She was married to Danny Burstein who is a Tony nominee this year for his role as Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge The Musical.

I was only lucky enough to see Luker in one show: The Music Man. She was glorious. She truly sang like an angel.

It’s tragic that she was taken from her family, friends and colleagues at such a young age (she was 59).

Becca will be filled with joy, beautiful music and certainly a few tears. But could anyone help you feel better are such a tragic loss than Rebecca Luker herself?

Tickets for Becca begin at $20 and go higher based on your ability to pay.

Several weeks ago Patrick Cassidy hosted a reunion of the original off-Broadway cast of the Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman musical Assassins. On Thursday, Classic Stage Company, which had to postpone their new production of the musical due to the pandemic, will celebrate the history of Assassins with Tell the Story, a free online event premiering on April 15th at 8:00 PM EDT/5:00 PM PDT.

Assassins looks at both successful and would-be presidential assassins. It’s a thoroughly engaging and thoughtful musical that suggests the fame these folks are seeking is not radically different than the attention the presidents and politicians receive.

In anticipation of Christmas and New Year’s, I have prepared for you the Best Bets in various categories for the holidays. I’ll start with Musicals/Cabaret Best Bets for the Holidays.

So if you love musicals, Broadway vocalists and cabaret shows, this list is for you! First up are those with specific dates, followed by programming that is already available and has a specific end date.

Here are my Musicals/Cabaret Best Bets for the Holidays:

A Catalina Christmas – December 24th – 10:00 PM EST/7:00 PM PST

Los Angeles’ Catalina Jazz Club is holding a holiday concert to help raise money to keep the club alive. In addition to their many jazz concerts, the venue features many stars of stage and screen performing their cabaret acts.

This concert will feature Rogelio Douglas, Jr., Chad Doreck, Anthony Fedorov, Joely Fisher, Jason Graae, David Hernandez, Niki Haris, Aaron Lazar, Jennifer Paz, Alisan Porter, Joan Ryan, Jake Simpson, Tyrone Mr. SuperFantastic, plus Thelma Houston and many more! Bruce Vilanch serves as host.

There is no charge to watch the concert on Catalina Jazz Club’s Facebook Page. Donations to its Go Fund Me campaign are encouraged.

Two by Two: The 50th Anniversary Virtual Concert – December 25th – December 28th

While we’re all familiar with the story of Noah and his ark, fewer of us are familiar with this 1970 musical from Richard Rodgers (Pal Joey), Martin Charnin (Annie) and Peter Stone (1776). The musical was not only based on the biblical story, but on a play called The Flowering Peach by Clifford Odets.

Celebrating this Golden anniversary are Karen Ziemba (Contact); Nikita Burshteyn (Mark Saltzman’s Romeo & Bernadette); Frank Calamaro (Man of La Mancha); Marcy DeGonge Manfredi (Phantom of the Opera), N’Kenge (Motown the Musical); Michael Notardonato (Mark Saltzman’s Romeo & Bernadette), and Sophia Tzougros.

Walter Willison, who played Japeth in the original production, plays Noah and also directs the virtual reading.

There’s no charge to watch Two by Two, however donations to The Actors Fund are strongly encouraged.

Sondheim Unplugged – Feinstein’s/54 Below – December 26th – January 9th

A popular series at New York’s Feinstein’s/54 Below is Sondheim Unplugged. It’s a series that examines Stephen Sondheim’s work through stories, anecdotes and performance.

The series returns online beginning at 8:00 PM EST/5:00 PM PST on December 26th. The cast for this inaugural virtual version features Darius de Haas (Shuffle Along, Or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All that Followed), cabaret singer Natalie Douglas, Telly Leung (Aladdin), T. Oliver Reid (Once on This Island), Nicholas Rodriguez (The Sound of Music) and Lucia Spina (South Pacific). Creator Phil Geoffrey Bond is the host and Joe Goodrich is the Music Director.

The show will remain on demand through January 9th. Tickets are $25.

A Very Weimar Christmas – Club Cumming Presents – December 30th – 8:00 PM EST/5:00 PM PST

Alan Cumming and his New York City Club Cumming are presenting a different holiday show.

Australian Kim David Smith is the star and creator of A Very Weimar Christmas, a show he first performed at Club Cumming last December.

Imagine Cabaret meets Christmas meets Ute Lemper meets the Scissor Sisters. Or perhaps David Bowie’s German recording era as a filter for a 1930s Christmas show.

It should be quite entertaining and provocative.

Tickets are $10. There is one-time only showing. No additional re-streaming.

John Lloyd Young NYE Show – Feinstein’s at Vitello’s – December 31st – 11:00 PM EST/8:00 PM PST

Tony Award-winner John Lloyd Young (Jersey Boys) performs live from Los Angeles’ Feinstein’s at Vitello’s in this New Year’s Eve concert.

While he’s best known for his performance as Frankie Valli, I always think of him for his sublime performance of A Multitude of Amys, a song by Stephen Sondheim cut from the musical Company.

Tickets are $36.75 (which includes service charges). The show will be available on demand for 24 hours. Ticket buyers will have the ability to watch the show for seven days after purchase.

An Evening with Audra McDonald – New York City Center – Now – January 3rd

New York City Center’s Gala Concert earlier this month with Tony Award winner Audra McDonald has been extended through January 3rd. This 75-minute concert features McDonald with accompanist/music director Andy Einhorn.

Beautifully filmed and recorded you’ll hear songs that have been part of McDonald’s repertoire for quite some time and others that might surprise you.

Tickets are $35.

If you haven’t seen McDonald in her Tony Award-winning performance as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, that is available to stream on HBO.

Broadway Close-Up – Kaufman Music Center – Now – January 15th

For $40 you can stream three concert/lectures about significant figures in musical theatre: Oscar Hammerstein II, Dorothy Fields and Stephen Schwartz.

Hammerstein is the book writer/lyricist best known for his collaborations with Richard Rodgers that yielded the musicals South Pacific, The King and I, Oklahoma! and The Sound of MUsic.

Fields is the book writer/lyricist who collaborated on the musicals Annie Get Your Gun, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Redhead and Sweet Charity.

Schwartz is the composer behind the juggernaut musical Wicked as well as the shows Pippin, Godspell and Rags.

Performing their songs in this three-part series are Broadway stars Clifton Duncan (The Play That Goes Wrong) and Nikki Renée Daniels (Company, Hamilton, Porgy and Bess) and jazz vocalist Gabrielle Stravelli.

Each show is one hour and is hosted by Sean Hartley. Videos will be available through January 15th.

Lyrics and Lyricists: Preludes – 92nd Street Y – Now – December 31st

All five episodes of the 92nd Street Y’s Lyrics and Lyricists: Preludes series are available for streaming. Each show is $15 or you can get all five for $60.

The five episodes celebrate the work of George Gershwin; Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt; Richard Rodgers, Mary Rodgers and Adam Guettel; Jule Styne and finally Music from Films.

The cast for this series includes Farah Alvin, Allison Blackwell, Nikki Renée Daniels, Katherine Henley, Jeff Kready, James T. Lane, Telly Leung, Kara Lindsay, Julia Murney, Zachary Noah Pisner, Zachary Prince, Pearl Sun and Mariand Torres. The narrator is Beth Malone.

Each show, written and music directed by Paul Masse, runs one hour. This series is available through December 31st.

Meet Me in St. Louis – Irish Rep – Now – January 2nd

I’ve previously written about this revised stage adaption of the classic 1944 film that starred Judy Garland. This version, from Irish Rep, stars Melissa Errico and Max von Essen. Not only do you get some classic songs like The Boy Next Door and The Trolley Song, you get the holiday season standard, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

Tickets are Pay What You Can with a suggested donation of $25.

American Utopia – HBO

If you have HBO and have yet to experience David Byrne’s American Utopia, you should stop reading and start watching. This exciting, thought-provoking, energetic and unique concert/Broadway show.

Spike Lee directed the film and huge acknowledgement must go to Director of Photography Ellen Kuras. She makes American Utopia feel like both a Broadway show and an intimate experience.

Encores! Archives Project YouTube Channel

Have you ever gone digging through New York City Center’s YouTube channel? It’s a treasure trove of clips from dozens of their Encores! productions of musicals with some of Broadway’s finest talent. These aren’t full shows, but there’s so much to enjoy.

What can you find? Jerry Herman’s Mack & Mabel; Renée Elise Goldsberry in a 2013 production of I’m Getting My Act Together and Taking It On the Road; 2015’s production of Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party; Laura Benanti in The Most Happy Fella from 2014; Kelli O’Hara in the 2010 production of Bells Are Ringing; Jake Gyllenhaal in Sunday in the Park with George; Lin Manuel-Miranda, Colin Donnell, Celia Keenan-Bolger and Betsy Wolfe in Merrily We Roll Along from 2012; Idina Menzel in Hair and so much more.

Once you get started you’ll be surprised how much time has passed. And it’s all free to view.

The Prom – Netflix

This musical didn’t last long on Broadway, but it had legions of passionate followers.

The Prom began life at Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. Written by Matthew Sklar with lyrics by Chad Beguelin and a book by Bob Martin and Beguelin, the musical tells the story of a group of Broadway stars facing the closure of their musical on opening night trying to find somewhere to direct their energy.

They zero in on a high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom, but the school won’t let her. Enter the Broadway stars to rescue the girl and their egos.

Ryan Murphy directed the film which stars James Corden, Ariana DeBose, Keegan-Michael Key, Nicole Kidman, Jo Ellen Pellman, Andrew Rannells, Meryl Streep and Kerry Washington.

Seth Rudetsky Concert Series – Now – January 3rd

Seth Rudetsky is making available for streaming many of this fall’s concerts with Braodway’s biggest stars. The line-up features Liz Callaway, La Chanze, Melissa Errico, Cheyenne Jackson, Rachel Bay Jones, Judy Kuhn, Beth Leavel, Beth Malone, Audra McDonald, Jessie Mueller, Karen Olivo, Orfeh and Andy Karl, Keala Settle and Lillias White.

These shows feature Rudetsky on keyboards at his home while the performers are in their own homes singing. There’s plenty of storytelling and conversation mixed in with the music.

Tickets are $20 for each concert or $15/each if you purchase all of them.

If you want to watch new live performances, Kerry Butler is joining Rudetsky live on December 27th at 8:00 PM EST/5:00 PM PST (with a re-run on December 28th at 3:00 PM EST/12:00 PM PST). On January 3rd, Alex Brightman performs live with a re-run on January 4th (same times). These tickets are $25.

Those are my Musicals/Cabaret Best Bets for the Holidays. I have additional recommendations for Classical, Dance and Jazz if you want even more choices.

Enjoy the holidays!

I’ve probably said this before, but this weekend’s list of Best Bets at Home: September 18th – September 20th is truly eclectic. Where else will you find a Russian musical, a celebration of dance from India, a centenary tribute to Noël Coward, an examination of string quartets, a re-invention of a classic opera, a Latino play, some cool jazz and a Broadway star in concert? Only at Cultural Attaché.

Let’s get to it. Here are your Best Bets at Home: September 18th – September 20th.

Anna Goryachova in “Carmen” (©2017 ROH/Photo by Bill Cooper)

Carmen – Royal Opera House – September 18th – October 17th

Georges Bizet’s most popular opera gets presented with a new perspective in this 2018 Royal Opera House production directed by Barrie Kosky. He is perhaps best-known for his innovative production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute which has been performed all over the world. LA Opera in Los Angeles has performed his production three times…so far.

Georges Bizet collaborated with librettists Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy on this immensely popular opera. It was based on Propser Mérimée’s novella of the same name.

When Carmen was first performed in Paris in 1875 it was considered both shocking and scandalous.

Set in Seville, Spain, Carmen is a gypsy who has caught everyone’s eye. A soldier, Don José, plays coy and gives her no attention. Her flirtation causes troubles for both when Don José’s girlfriend, Micaëla arrives. Tensions escalate between the two women and after a knight fight, José must arrest Carmen. When she seduces him it sets off a series of events that will not end well for the gypsy woman.

In Kosky’s production, Carmen (sung by Anna Goryachova) is front and center. The opera is told from her point-of-view. There is a narrator and the production uses music Bizet eliminated from the opera’s earliest performances.

In an interview with the New York Times Kosky said, “Everyone assumes Carmen is what people are used to. A big Spanish spectacle: loud, huge orchestra, huge chorus. Lots of Spain…The piece is not a Spanish opera. It’s a French opera, from the first note. Actually it’s not even a French opera, it’s an operetta that turns into an opera in the fourth act.

“This is the mistake that people make. They assume that it’s a doom-laden story of a Gypsy with black curly hair and gold earrings, and a story of love and sex and whatever. Well, it turns into that, but for the first two thirds of the evening, it’s sunlight, it’s joy, it’s naughtiness, it’s irony. I keep saying to the cast, ‘You’re in an operetta. You are not in ‘le grand opéra.’”

This production of Carmen will be available for one month and does have a fee of £3 (which is equivalent to approximately $4).

Playwright Evelina Fernández (Courtesy her Facebook page)

Sleep with Angels – Latino Theater Company – September 18th – September 27th

In their continuing series of archived plays and readings of new works, Latino Theater Company is offering a sneak peek of Sleep with Angels. Written by Evelina Fernández, the play is scheduled to have its world premiere with the company next year.

A mysterious woman named Juana shows up on Molly’s doorstep. She arrives just as Molly is in need of someone to watch her children now that she’s separated from her husband.

The kids are charmed by Juana, but who is she?

Sleep with Angels is directed by José Luis Valenzuela. The cast features Aileen Alfaro, Esperanza America, Sandino Gonzalez-Flores, Sal Lopez, Xavi Moreno, Robert Revell, Lucy Rodriguez and Elia Saldana.

The first opportunity to watch Sleep with Angels is at 10:00 PM EDT/7:00 PM PDT on Friday, September 18th. The reading will be available through September 27th.

While at Latino Theater Company’s website you’ll also notice that a film of their 2010 production of La Victima is also available. This was the company’s first show and it starred the late Lupe Ontiveras. La Victima will be available for viewing through September 24th.

Scott Yoo and guests in “Now Heart This: Haydn King of Strings” (photo credit: Arcos Film + Music/Courtesy of PBS)

Now Hear This “Haydn: King of Strings” – PBS Great Performances – September 18th (check local listings)

The work of composer Franz Joseph Haydn is explored in this one-hour show on PBS’s Great Performances. In particular, host Scott Yoo will explore the role folk music from Austria, Hungary and Scotland played in informing the composer’s composition of his Emperor Quartet. Haydn is considered the father of the string quartet having written 68 of them.

Amongst his guests are violinist Geoff Nuttall and the St. Lawrence String Quartet.

Jack DeJohnette (Photo by Fanny Delsol/Courtesy of jackdejohnette.com)

Jack DeJohnette/Don Byron/Matt Garrison – Shapeshifter Lab – September 19th – 5:00 PM EDT/2:00 PM PDT

Simply put, Jack DeJohnette is one of the most important drummers in the history of jazz. His collaborations have included recordings and performances with John Abercrombie, Alice Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Keith Jarrett, Charles Lloyd and John Scofield. And that’s just a few of a very extensive list of credits.

On Saturday he will be performing live from home with bassist Matthew Garrison and clarinetist Don Byron.

Garrison, the son of John Coltrane bassist Jimmy Garrison, has recorded and performed with a broad range of artists that spans from Betty Carter to Whitney Houston; The Gil Evans Orchestra to Paul Simon and Tito Puente to Joni Mitchell.

Byron is a musician, teacher and composer. His range of musical styles vacillates from jazz to klezmer and includes composing for films and for such ensembles as the Kronos Quartet.

Tickets to watch this performance require a minimum donation of $20. The performance will remain available for three days after the live stream on Saturday.

“Anna Karenina” (Courtesy StageRussia.com)

Anna Karenina – Broadway on Demand – September 19th – 7:00 PM EDT/4:00 PM PDT

Not all musicals are happy. Case in point is this Russian musical by Roman Ignatyev and librettist Yully Kim. Based on Leo Tolstoy’s tragic love story between Anna Karenina and military officer Alexey Vronsky. The musical is set in the late 19th century amongst Russian nobility.

Ekaterina Guseva plays Anna and Sergey Lee plays Alexey. Alina Chevik directs and choreography is by Irina Korneeva.

The musical is sung in Russian with English subtitles.

This production was filmed in front of a live audience in 2018. The pay-per-view price is $5.99. Anna Karenina will also be available for two days afterwards to rent for the same amount.

Miss Saigon (another not-happy musical) had a helicopter land on stage. I’m sure the train required for Anna Karenina will make that accomplishment seem terribly outdated.

Noël Coward (Courtesy of New York Public Library Archives)

A Marvellous Party – Broadway on Demand – September 20th – 2:30 PM EDT/11:30 AM PDT

I’ll Leave It To You marked the first time playwright/actor Noël Coward had a play of his performed in London’s West End. He also appeared in the show. I’ll Leave It To You opened at the New Theatre on July 21, 1920 and ran for 37 performances. The rest, as they say, is history.

Coward went on to write such plays as Hay FeverPrivate LivesDesign for LivingPresent Laughter and Blithe Spirit.

In 2006 the New Theatre was renamed the Noël Coward Theatre.

To celebrate this centenary, The Noël Coward Foundation is presenting an all-star event called A Marvellous Party. His words and music will be performed (in either self-recorded performances at home or performances filmed following Covid-19 guidelines) by Kate Burton, Judi Dench, Stephen Fry, Montego Glover, Derek Jacobi, Josh James, Cush Jumbo, Robert Lindsay, Kristine Nielsen, Bebe Neuwirth, Julian Ovenden, Patricia Routledge, Kate Royal, Emma Thompson, Giles Terera, Indira Varma and Lia Williams.

A Marvellous Party will remain available on demand for two weeks (or a fortnight as Coward might say.)

There is no charge to watch the show, but you will need to register to do so. Donations to Acting for Others and The Actors Fund are encouraged.

Judy Kuhn (Courtesy of judykuhn.net)

Judy Kuhn with Seth Rudetsky – September 20th – 8:00 PM EDT/5:00 PM PDT

In this week’s Seth Rudetsky concert series, four-time Tony Award nominee Judy Kuhn joins for conversation and song. Kuhn originated the role of Helen Bechdel in Fun Home (one of her Tony nominations). Her other nominations came for her performances in Les Misérables (as Cosette); Chess (as Florence) and the 1993 revival of She Loves Me (as Amalia Balash).

She also memorably played Fosca in the Classic Stage Company’s 2013 production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Passion.

There will be an encore presentation of this show on Monday, September 21st at 3:00 PM EDT/12:00 PM PDT. The show will also be available for pay-per-view viewing next week. Tickets for all viewings are $25.

On March 22nd, composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim turned 90. This spring was scheduled to have countless concerts, tributes and special events. Of course, those had to be cancelled. So Raúl Esparza, who has appeared in several Sondheim musicals, decided to put together a virtual concert to celebrate the man he calls “Steve.” Take Me the World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration will be streamed on Broadway.Com’s website and their YouTube channel on Sunday, April 26th at 8 PM EDT/5 PM PDT.

Who did Esparza, who will also serve as host, get to celebrate Steve? Only some of the biggest names of stage and screen:

Meryl Streep who appeared in the film version of Into the Woods and also performed in The Frogs while a student at Yale.

Bernadette Peters who has appeared in Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, a revival of Gypsy (Sondheim wrote the lyrics), revivals of A Little Night Music and Follies, plus Bed and a Chair.

Mandy Patinkin who also appeared in Sunday in the Park with George.

Patti LuPone who has appeared in revivals of Sweeney Todd, Gypsy plus the recently postponed revival of Company and a concert version of the same show from 2012.

Katrina Lenk her co-star from Company.

Laura Benanti who played LuPone’s daughter in Gypsy. She also appeared in a revival of Into the Woods.

Michael Cerveris who appeared opposite LuPone in Sweeney Todd and was also in the Broadway production of Assassins, will appear. He also appeared in a production of Passion.

Audra McDonald who appeared in the same production of Passion. As will Donna Murphy who originated the role of Fosca in Passion.

Neil Patrick Harris will be performing. He appeared in the same production of Assassins with Cerveris and also a concert version of Company with LuPone.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford who starred in the most recent revival of Sunday in the Park with George.

Christine Baranski who appeared in productions of Sweeney Todd in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. and a London concert performance of Follies.

Brian Stokes Mitchell who was Sweeney opposite Baranski in Washington, D.C.

Sutton Foster who played The Baker’s Wife in the Hollywood Bowl production of Into the Woods.

Kelli O’Hara who appeared in the 2001 revival of Follies. She also sang a gorgeous version of Take Me To The World from Evening Primrose on the recent one-night-only return of the Rosie O’Donnell Show.

Aaron Tveit who appeared in a production of Company.

Brandon Uranowitz who appeared in Encores! Off-Center production of Road Show with Esparza.

Maria Friedman who has appeared in London productions of Sunday in the Park with George, Passion and Merrily We Roll Along.

Lin-Manuel Miranda who has also appeared in a production of Merrily We Roll Along.

Melissa Errico who appeared opposite Esparza in a production of Sunday in the Park with George and also appeared in Do I Hear a Waltz? and an off-Broadway production of Passion.

Judy Kuhn, Errico’s co-star from that production of Passion.

Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein who are currently starring in Richard Linklater’s film version of Merrily We Roll Along.

Elizabeth Stanley who appeared in Company with Esparza.

Linda Lavin who appeared in the Kennedy Center’s 2011 revival of Follies.

Chip Zien original cast member of the first production of Into the Woods.

Lea Salonga who played Mrs. Lovett in a production of Sweeney Todd in the Philippines.

Ann Harada, Austin Ku, Kelvin Moon Loh and Thom Sesma who all appeared in an off-Broadway production of Pacific Overtures.

Of course, you don’t have to ever have appeared in one of Sondheim’s shows to be part of this concert. Just ask Kristin Chenoweth, Josh Groban, Iain Armitage, composer Stephen Schwartz and Randy Rainbow who will be participating.

If that isn’t enough, there are scheduled to be special appearances by Victor Garber (Sweeney Todd), Joanna Gleason (Into the Woods), Nathan Lane (the Broadway production of The Frogs and a revival of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum) and director Steven Spielberg (the remake of West Side Story).

Mary-Mitchell Campbell, who also worked with Esparza on Company, is the music director for the concert. Take Me to the World also serves a fundraiser for ASTEP (Artists Striving to End Poverty,) an organization Campbell created with Juilliard students.

The date of April 26th was not casually chosen. It marks the 50th anniversary of the debut of the Sondheim/George Furth musical Company on Broadway. The revival of Company was set to open on March 22nd (Sondheim’s birthday). Producers hope to re-open the show, which had been in previews, once it is safe to do so.

So what will you be doing on Sunday? I know where I’ll be. Celebrating the 90th birthday of the greatest living composer of Broadway musicals. I’m looking forward to hearing each and every one of them Take Me to the World of Stephen Sondheim.

If you are a die-hard Broadway lover, you would want to have Seth Rudetsky’s life. He hosts a Sirius XM show where he plays music from Broadway shows and talks to the biggest and brightest stars of the Great White Way. He writes a regular column for Playbill’s website. He tours the country combining Q&A’s with Broadway stars with performances in which he plays piano for them. (He has two scheduled for the Wallis Annenberg in the spring.)

In other words, Seth Rudetsky lives and breathes Broadway. So if you want to know the inside stories about all the famous folk who have spent time treading the boards in New York, Rudetsky’s book, Seth’s Broadway Diary #3 is essential reading.

Talking to someone who regularly interviews people himself is an interesting challenge. Since we spoke on the day of the Grammy nominations, we got right into it.

In the category of Best Cast Album the Grammy’s only have three nominees: Dear Evan Hansen, Hello Dolly! and Come From Away. Did they miss something or is that a reflection of the past year of musical theatre?

Literally that to me is not the greater issue. The complete lack of caring about Broadway at the Grammy Awards is. Because they don’t give a shit. There’s no criterion? How can Hello Dolly! be up against Dear Evan Hansen? Are you comparing the scores? The recording? What are the Grammy Awards voting on? Where they have a thousand sub categories in other genres, they don’t have a best album of a show or best revival. It’s so insulting. It makes me angry.

When you tell these stories, whether in your columns or on your show, do the performers involved give you permission to do so? Or does it come with the territory when they tell you the stories?

Yes and no. I think I have a really good sense of what I can say and what I can’t. Last night after the concert [a series he produces called Concert For America: Stand Up, Sing Out! that raises funds for civil rights organizations] someone was telling me a story “not as a friend and not as a columnist.” I maybe have gotten someone annoyed at me three times. Do they realize it would go into my columns? Who cares? The stories are hilarious. If you don’t like it, don’t tell me anything. I’m not Pollyanna and I don’t want to write only positive stuff, but I won’t write mean-spirited stories.

Of all the relationships you’ve developed over the years, which one surprises you the most that it actually exists?

Seth Rudetsky's good friend, Andrea Martin
Andrea Martin

Probably Andrea Martin – because she’s such a close friend of mine. I was so obsessed with her growing up. It’s just weird how close we are and what a fan I was with the TV star. Almost every idol I’ve met has been exactly what I wanted them to be. She’s hilarious. Just the other day it was really weird talking to Andrea McArdle. I remember reading that Annie book with the red cover. She was a photograph on an album. I had never seen her live, but she was such a megastar. It’s nice that everyone has lived up to who I wanted them to be.

Do you think the price structure for Broadway shows will make it impossible for a future Seth Rudetsky’s to get exposure to shows the way you did?

I’m not an expert, but it began with the Broadway Inner Circle with The Producers. That was the first crazy megahit, more than Rent, where scalpers were making a lot of money and this scheme came up to bust scalpers. I was just thinking the other day it’s so expensive to put on a show. Most of those costs are initial costs. I wonder if there is a new tactic. Why can’t you borrow money on the run of the show? For every three months you run, you pay back what it would have cost.

Broadway insider Seth Rudetsky tells stories of Broadway past and present
Seth Rudetsky with Ann Harada, Judy Kuhn and Charles Busch

If you’re going to talk about the next young Seth Rudetsky, the problem is the devastating destruction of arts in the schools. There has been such a marginalization of Broadway as something gay. The arts are considered gay and feminine and it can be cut because of misogyny. The arts were not feminine in the old days. Ed Sullivan was right wing, ultra-straight and he had Broadway on every week. Now if you like Broadway you are gay. How does a kid know they like to sing or act if they don’t have a chance to do it? That’s really where the fault is in finding our next Stephen Sondheim.

You did your own jukebox musical, Disaster! A Musical. But are you concerned that shows based on pre-existing material or jukebox musicals show a lack of imagination on producer’s parts?

Yes and no. People say, “Oh Seth, you took the lazy way out. You wrote a jukebox musical about disaster movies.” I did it because I really wanted to. I love disaster movies and 70s music. I think there’s this theory if you have a well-know title, that’s a surefire way to have a Broadway show. It isn’t. But it is a surefire way to get investors. It’s not a way to sell tickets.

I was talking to Hal Prince [director of Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd and more] about when someone came to him with an idea. He said, “Nobody did that. We would talk and create it together. It used to be much more artistic.” There are still some producers that still do that. We don’t have a lot of them like we used to.

If you could go back in time and see any productions you never got a chance to see and performers you never got a chance to experience, what and who would they be?

100% Funny Girl with Barbra Streisand and West Side Story with Chita Rivera. I would die to see what Barbra sounded like live and would have died to see Chita do the original choreography for “America.” I think about it all the time. Those two 100%. [For the record, it took Seth about 2 seconds to start his answer to that question.]

You produced the Broadway for Orlando project after the massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Florida. And you have the Concert for America series. What’s the next phase of advocacy you have planned?

We are going to start in January doing salons. We did one in Judy Kuhn’s apartment [She starred in Fun Home, Les Misérables]. These are for causes or particular candidates we believe in. We’ve raised so much money. If anyone is reading this and wants to help a particular candidate or cause, keep us in mind.
