Simply put, Miscast finds Broadway stars performing songs they’d never really be cast to do.

This year’s line-up is impressive:

Annaleigh Ashford (Sunday in the Park with George), Melissa Barrera (In the Heights), Gavin Creel (Hello, Dolly!), Robin de Jesús (The Boys in the Band), Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton), Leslie Grace (In the Heights), Cheyenne Jackson (Finian’s Rainbow), Jai’Len Josey (SpongeBob SquarePants), LaChanze (Summer: The Donna Summer Musical), Idina Menzel (Wicked), Kelli O’Hara (Kiss Me, Kate), Billy Porter (Kinky Boots), Kelly Marie Tran (Raya and the Last Dragon), Aaron Tveit (Moulin Rouge) and Patrick Wilson (The Full Monty).

Creel and Tveit will be reuniting after their steamy performance of this song from Rent at the 2016 Miscast:

There will also be special appearances by McKinley Belcher III, Nick Blaemire, Sandra Caldwell, Juan Castano, Trip Cullman, Hugh Dancy, Halley Feiffer, Dominique Fishback, Jennifer Garner, Paige Gilbert, Lucas Hedges, Evan Jonigkeit, Alex Lacamoire, Donja R. Love, Zosia Mamet, Laurie Metcalf, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ana Nogueira and Marisa Tomei.

By my calculations, this cast has received 15 Tony Awards and 27 Tony nominations.

In the half hour before the show starts there will be a pre-show that will revisit some of the highlights from previous Miscast galas.

Though you can watch this for free, there’s also the ability to donate to MCC Theater. For you big money folks, you can purchase tickets ranging from $1500 – $50,000 with escalating perks.

There is also an auction with multiple items available for bidding including three trips, signed memorabilia, personalized messages from Judith Light and Julia Margulies and more.

Don’t worry if you can’t watch the show on Sunday. Miscast will remain available online through Thursday, May 20th.

Barbecue is this week’s offering in the Spotlight on Plays series from Broadway’s Best Shows. The streaming reading becomes available on December 10th and will remain available through Monday, December 14th.

This is a very funny play that has an early twist you don’t see coming. Reviews of the play have often given away that twist, but I say, the less you know the better.

On a very basic level the play is about a family intervention disguised as a barbecue. They are all there to help one family member who has a substantial drinking problem. Things from there don’t go quite as the characters planned, nor as the audience thinks they will. And there are more twists ahead.

Christopher Isherwood, writing in the New York Times, had issues with the second act, but admitted, “Mr. O’Hara, the author of last season’s audacious Bootycandy, has a heat-seeking imagination when it comes to style and structure.” (There are spoilers in his review, so if you want to be surprised, don’t read it.)

I enjoyed the play when I saw it at the Geffen Playhouse in 2016. That production was directed by Colman Domingo who appears in this reading.

The rest of the cast includes Carrie Coon (2013 revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), Kimberly Hébert Gregory (By the Way, Meet Vera Stark), Annie McNamara (Tony nominee for Slave Play), S. Epatha Merkerson (Come Back Little Sheba), Laurie Metcalf (Three Tall Women), David Morse (The Iceman Cometh), Kristine Nielsen (Present Laughter), Tamberla Perry and Heather Simms – both of whom appeared in Barbecue at The Public Theater.

Tickets are only $5 with proceeds benefitting The Actor’s Fund.

On Thursday, July 16th, Broadway Barks will take place at 7:30 PM EDT/4:30 PM PDT and can be watched on Broadway.com’s Facebook page.

This year marks the 22nd annual event. Each event features celebrities and shelter pets that are available for adoption. This year, with the pandemic, animals and celebrities are being paired up within the safety of their homes.

Peters and her colleagues have assembled a great line-up of talent:

32 different shelters will participate both in providing dogs and cats available for adoption and in receiving money raised during the event. There is no cost to join Broadway Barks online, but donations are encouraged.

Every year Broadway Barks is a hugely successful pet adoption event. Over the twenty-two years it has taken place they have been able to place approximately 85% of the animals. That means if you fall in love with one of the dogs or cats you see online, you better act quickly!

During Bernadette Peters: A Special Concert, Michael Urie talked about how passionate Peters is in rescuing animals. He said that she regularly goes to shelters that have a “kill policy” (meaning that animals will be euthanized after a certain amount of time has passed) and takes them to shelters that do not have the same policy.

She and co-founder Mary Tyler Moore found a way to take their passion for our four-legged friends and add their celebrity to help animals find homes.
