Usually as the summer gets underway, I post the ten Hollywood Bowl Concerts not to miss. But this is quite a good year for concerts at Los Angeles’ beloved outdoor venue. So this year it is 12 Hollywood Bowl Concerts Not to Miss.

Here are the twelve concerts I think warrant a journey to the Hollywood Bowl this summer:

JULY FOURTH FIREWORKS SPECTACULAR WITH HARRY CONNICK, JR. – July 2nd – July 4th

If you’ve never experienced a fireworks show at the Hollywood Bowl, you clearly don’t know what you’re missing. This year’s headliner for the annual July 4th concerts is Harry Connick, Jr.

His most recent album centered on songs of faith, but I would expect this concert to focus more on the material he’s best known for which are jazz standards and songs from the Great American Songbook.

Thomas Wilkins leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in these three concerts.

For tickets and more information, please go here.

For those not in the Los Angeles area, he’ll be performing at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park in San Diego on July 6th; Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA on July 9th and 10th and at Chateau Ste.
Who could ask for anything more than pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, opera’s Isabel Leonard and Broadway star Tony Yazbeck in an evening of songs and music by George Gershwin?

The program opens with the Cuban Overture and is then followed by Variations on “I Got Rhythm.“ Leonard and Yazbeck conclude the first half with selections of Gershwin’s songs.

The second act features Thibaudet playined Rhapsody in Blue and closes with An American In Paris.

MAESTRO OF THE MOVIES: THE MUSIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS AND MORE – July 12th – July 14th

This annual celebration of all things John Williams will be a little different. Yes, Williams curated the program utilizing his own music and many classic scores he loves from the Golden Age, but he will not be appearing this year.

Williams had to cancel all upcoming appearances due to a health issue “from which he is expected to make a full recovery.” Does that mean light sabers won’t be at the ready for the inevitable selections of music from Star Wars? Of course not.

David Newman, who regularly conducts the first half of these concerts each year, will be conducting the full program.

BIG BAND NIGHT – July 17th

If you love large ensemble jazz music, this concert is for you. The evening opens with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra (who have made countless appearances at the Hollywood Bowl).

Next up is The Count Basie Orchestra who will feature vocalist Nnenna Freelon.

The headliner is the Maria Schneider Orchestra which is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Earlier this year Maria Schneider released a 3-lp vinyl box set entitled Decades. You can’t stream that recording, you can only get it here. But you can hear this incredible artist and her musicians live. This is her only US appearance until September.

STRAVINSKY & KHACHATURIAN – July 30th

I’ve written before how Aram Khachaturian’s music isn’t performed often enough. As they did in the Walt Disney Concert Hall this season, the LA Philharmonic is breathing new life into his work in this program that features the composer’s Violin Concerto and the Spartacus Suite No. 2. Martin Chalifour is the soloist for the concerto.

The concert closes with the 1919 version of Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite. Kevin John Edusei conducts.

PROKOFIEV & SHOSTAKOVICH – August 6th

One of my top five piano concerti of the entire repertoire is being performed by Denis Kozhukhin in this concert. It is Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26. (My favorite recording of it is by Martha Argerich.)

The second half of the program is Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. The work was completed the same year that Joseph Stalin died and is widely interpreted as the composer’s commentary on the brutality of the Soviet government during Stalin’s reign. It’s a big and powerful symphony.

Ryan Bancroft leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

HERBIE HANCOCK HEAD HUNTERS 50th – August 14th

Where were you on October 26, 1973? Maybe you remember the release of Herbie Hancock’s Head Hunters which is considered amongst the best jazz-fusion/jazz-funk albums of all time.

Watermelon Man may not be a title recognize, but I guarantee you the music has burrowed its way into your soul.

This is the ONLY reunion of Hancock with the surviving members of that record: drummer Harvey Mason; saxophonist Bennie Maupin and percussionist Bill Summers. Playing bass is Marcus Miller as original bassist Paul Jackson passed away in 2021.

The original four-track album runs less than 45 minutes. Which means there will be a whole lot more music performed by Hancock and his bandmates.

SARA BAREILLES WITH THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL ORCHESTRA – August 17th

What at one point years ago might have seemed like a pop concert, is now pure heaven for musical theater lovers. Sara Bareilles is a three-time Tony Award nominee having received two nominations for Best Original Score (Waitress in 2016 and SpongeBob SquarePants in 2018) and for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for the 2023 revival of Into the Woods.

Of course, she’ll perform music from throughout her career and this is her only concert on her schedule until late September.

But wait, there’s more. Tony Award winner Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton) will open the show.

Thomas Wilkins conducts the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

THE RITE OF SPRING – August 22nd

The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky is one of classical music’s most important and enduring works. Hearing this monumental work outside is reason enough to see this concert. But fans of Stravinsky’s music are in for a full evening of his genius.

Teddy Abrams, Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra, conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a concert that opens with Stravinsky’s arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner. His Circus Polka follows and the first half closes with Leila Josefowicz performing his Violin Concerto. Then the main attraction is on tap for the second half of the program.

The soloists for this concert are bass Dashon Burton; mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey; tenor Anthony León; countertenor Key’mon Murrah and soprano Hera Kyesang Park. The Los Angeles Master Chorale also performs.

DUDAMEL AND THE STARS OF OPERA – September 12th

I couldn’t tell you the last time tenor Jonas Kaufmann performed in Los Angeles, but I can tell you the next time he will – at this concert where he will be joined by soprano Diana Damrau.

The two will perform selected arias and duets.

The concert opens with Verdi’s Overture to I vespri sicilliani which is followed by the ever-popular Intermezzo from Cavalleria rusticana by Mascagni. Respighi’s Pines of Rome closes the concert.

Gustavo Dudamel leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

When violinist Leila Josefowicz takes to the stage for tonight’s A Tribute to Oliver Knussen at Walt Disney Concert Hall, she will once again be performing music that many other musicians choose to ignore. As we continue our conversation with Josefowicz that began last week, she will discuss the choices she’s made in her career and how she got to the place where contemporary music was her emphasis.

“The first time I said to my manager, who is no longer my manager, I said, ‘I want to perform this [John] Adams piece.’ I was 20 or 21 years old at the time,” she reveals when we spoke by phone. “And they said, ‘Well, this piece has already been done five times. I’m not sure you’ll get more performances of this.’ I thought, ‘What’s wrong with this?'”

For many violinists there are “The Big 5” concerti that are most commonly performed. The composers on this list are Beethoven, Brahms, Bruch, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky. But Josefowicz wasn’t fully satisfied performing those works.

“When I played Tchaikovsky and all those things and got applause after the first movement – which is typical – I was asking why do I not feel satisfied. I was 18 or 19 and I was not quite going down the newer music path yet. I didn’t know the answers yet except I can’t spend my whole career doing this. I have to make changes and I have to figure this out.”

It was when she performed the Adams that it started to come into focus.

“The John Adams was the first piece of a living composer I met and worked on. It was my first experience and it was so incredible. It became my answer. It takes time to feel like you know the answers to these questions.”

Being the performer who is taking the non-traditional route meant there was bound to be some grousing about the long-term viability of such a decision.

“There were some comments about pigeon-holing. But I thought go ahead and pigeon-hole me. If I’m great at 20th and 21st century music, great. I didn’t see the threat to that. Later if I wanted to change course, I’d change course.” She took a pause before adding, “I have no desire to change course.”

As a soloist, Josefowicz also likes the rush of energy that comes from giving a world premiere performance. In 2009, she gave the first performance of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Violin Concerto at Walt Disney Concert Hall with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

“We are always high on adrenalin,” she says thinking back to the April night. “It was his second to last week as Music Director and they love him. It was a very sentimental and charged time. Everyone, the orchestra and audience, was all on the edge of their seat. You never know about world premieres. It’s like a birth. You hope the piece getting born will have a long and healthy life.”

As many composers have said, having the world premiere of a new work is easier than getting repeat performances. But Josefowicz knows one way to assure additional performances.

“Depending on the notoriety of the composer and how well different administrations around the world know the composer, it really does depend how often you get those performances. Knussen, Adams, Salonen, these people are composer/conductors and I am attracted to this because not only they great composers, but they conduct their own music. They can program their own music and that makes it easier in the life of the piece. The best advice I can give any composer is to learn to conduct well because there’s a chance you can conduct your own music. Orchestras love this. There’s real authority to that.”

Whether a work is new or part of the standard repertoire, Josefowicz feels music has transformative power. As she told The Telegraph in 2005, “There so much fear and ange rain the world and music is a way of transporting people.” Her perspective on that has not changed.

“I think it has always been totally vital. We go through very dark periods. I think the technology that is happening in the world today is sort of taking the world over. We can survive in life without a smart device. It really does bring a certain purity to what we’re doing with horsehair, wood, putting notes on paper and expressing them. There’s definitely in my mind a clean purity to that live performance; the human aspects of performing and expression. So it’s always going to be very important. How the world evolves, we’ll see.”

As you know from previous postings, violinist Leila Josefowicz just completed four performances of Oliver Knussen’s Violin Concerto. Josefowicz and conductor Susanna Mälkki have curated A Tribute to Oliver Knussen taking place on Tuesday, December 10th at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

This concert, part of the LA Phil’s Green Umbrella program, finds the LA Phil New Music Group performing. That group was formed in 1981.

Mälkki and Josefowicz were both friends of Knussen (who died in 2018). In our interview with Josefowicz she talked about how important this concert is for her and how therapeutic it is as well.

The program the two have come up with combines work by Knussen and those by other composers:

Colin Matthews’ Hidden Variables opens the program. That is followed by Knussen’s Reflection. Helen Grime’s A Cold Spring follows. A piano quartet by Huw Watkins then precedes two Knussen compositions: Ophelia Dances Book 1 and Two Organa. The concert is scheduled to close with Jonathan Harvey’s Mortuos Plango, Vivos Voco.

These composers were selected because they were Knussen’s friends, colleagues and/or students.

Josefowicz will be performing. Also appearing in this concert is pianist John Novacek.

If you recently attended the LA Philharmonic performance of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and enjoyed it, this is a good follow-up concert. Knussen’s work is equally challenging and equally satisfying on both an emotional and intellectual level.

“If you think about this he was one of the most important figures and has been in new music right up until his passing,” says classical violinist Leila Josefowicz when asked about composer Oliver Knussen. “He is beloved in the United Kingdom, because he lived there. In the United States people did know him for his visits to various orchestras, many of which I was with him.”

Friday night Josefowicz will perform Knussen’s Violin Concerto with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the first of three concerts. Susanna Mälkki will conduct the performances (which also include Beethoven’s Third Symphony). On Tuesday the two women have curated a concert entitled A Tribute to Oliver Knussen. That concert will include three works by Knussen and four works by other composers: Colin Matthews, Helen Grime, Huw Watkins and Jonathan Harvey. Josefowicz will perform at that concert as well.

Over the weekend I spoke with Josefowicz about her passion for Knussen’s work and her professional relationship that lasted over twenty years. Below are edited excerpts from our conversation.

In a 1999 interview with Classic CD, Knussen said, “To me real music is real music when you’re not sitting around thinking it’s music – it actually takes you over.” When was the first time you remember feeling that way about his work?

The first time I heard his violin concerto because it was written right before I met him. I was about 20 when I met him. I was actually at a swimming pool on a lawn chair and I listened to it on headphones watching the score. I thought it was so incredible I jumped into the pool.

You’ve since performed his Violin Concerto over 30 times. How did your working relationship with Knussen afford you insight into this work and what he wanted to express with it?

His music is instantly recognizable if you know his language. It’s hard to describe different language, but it is detailed, precise and his use of color is just exquisite, though it’s not always pretty at all. The attention to detail is really incredible. I got to know him over 21 years. We had many performances and traveling around the world. It was a huge influence on my musical training, my perspective and my life.

Knussen said of the composition that “At times the violinist resembles a tightrope walker progressing along a decidedly unstable high wire strung across the span that separates the opening and closing sounds of the piece” Do you agree and, if so, how do you as that tightrope walker maintain your balance during the 17 minutes of the piece?

The beginning and the end and the transition between second and third movements is with the high E harmonics being held. This is sort of like this basic striking sound that is recognizable beginning, middle and end. The rest is a very suspenseful, expressive and, at times, sort of daredevil language. To make this as clear as possible is the key. You do a lot of things very precisely and very quickly. It’s like being a gymnast. He was a very precise man musically speaking and it definitely shows in the music.

When you and Susanna Mälkki were offered the chance to curate this tribute, what stood out as the priority for what you wanted an audience to understand about Knussen’s work and by extension your friend?

This is a very loving and respectful tribute to him. Susanna knew him. She visited his house with him. It’s an important gesture on our end to say this man is so important even if he is not here on this earth anymore. He is so important and was an inspiration for us.

He had all the qualities that you will hear in the music: incredible intelligence and wit, drama and suspense. He was one of the great great characters for sure in my life. One of the most influential people, not just for me, but for many people. I was especially close to him. It was hard for a long time to believe he wasn’t here. It was a shock. It’s therapeutic to pay tribute to him and this is very important to me.

On Tuesday we will have more of our interview with Leila Josefowicz where she will discuss her reasons for choosing new music and the advice she got early in her career about doing so.

You’ll have three chances this weekend to see violinist Leila Josefowicz plays Oliver Knussen’s Violin Concerto with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The concerts begin on Friday night and will continue with matinee performances on Saturday and Sunday. Susanna Mälkki, Principal Guest Conductor of the LA Phil, will conduct.

When you look at the website for these concerts they are billed as Beethoven’s Eroica (aka Third Symphony.) There is undeniable power and beauty in this symphony. When it premiered in Vienna in 1805, it was clear the composer had set a new high bar for symphonic composition. Beethoven’s four movements moved the symphonic form into new and daring (for the times) direction. No longer was a symphony purely for the delight of the audience. This was a work that dared say and do more than just entertain. Beethoven expresses big ideas with this symphony.

If you saw the film The Soloist, you might recall a scene where Steve Lopez (yes, the Los Angeles Times writer – played in the film by Robert Downey, Jr.) takes Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx) to a rehearsal by the LA Philharmonic. Esa-Pekka Salonen is conducting the rehearsal. The music, Beethoven’s Eroica, enters Ayers’ soul in a truly profound way.

Contemporary music is at the heart of Leila Josefowicz’s soul. She’s long been an advocate of late 20th and 21st century composers. The person probably nearest and dearest to her heart was the late composer Oliver Knussen (he passed away in 2018).

Knussen had a close and fruitful relationship with the LA Philharmonic as well. It was a relationship that lasted over 30 years.

Though Josefowicz was not the first person to perform this complicated and daring concerto, she is no doubt the person who has performed it the most. She toured extensively with Knussen with this work.

Though I’ve never seen the concerto performed live, I can tell you from multiple listenings that this is a wonderfully complex piece of music that reveals more and more of itself with repeated listenings. This opportunity to hear Josefowicz perform this live is irresistible.

Los Angeles audiences have been given, through the adventurous programming at the LA Phil, an incredible exposure to contemporary music. With Josefowicz as one of its biggest advocates, I strongly recommend attending one of these three performances.

Also of note is that this it the first of two programs celebrating the life and work of Knussen. The other concert, part of the Green Umbrella Program, finds Josefowicz and Mälkki teaming up again for a program they curated that features three works by Knussen and the work of four other composers. A Tribute to Oliver Knussen takes place on Tuesday, December 10th.

For those lucky enough to have had a ticket to the Los Angeles Philharmonic concert on May 10th at Walt Disney Concert Hall, they got to hear the first part of a new work by composer Thomas Adés entitled Inferno. This world premiere was just a precursor for the main attraction: Adés & McGregor: A Dance Collaboration at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Friday and Saturday.

Composer/Conductor Thomas Adés (Photo by Brian Voce)

What I heard of Inferno on that May morning was music that felt like the physical and emotional equivalent of a roller coaster. I literally felt my heartbeat change in response to this exhilarating music.

The music was written for this ballet. Now that music will be married to the dance as the main attraction of these two performances.

Wayne McGregor, who choreographed the piece, has teamed his company with The Royal Ballet for these performances.

The first piece on the program is a West Coast Premiere called Outlier. This 22-minute work had its world premiere in 2010 in New York. Concentric Paths, a 2005 violin concerto by Adés is the music used in Outlier.

The second piece on the program is another world premiere. LIVING ARCHIVE: AN AI PERFORMANCE EXPERIMENT is the name of this work. (The all caps is part of the naming.) This production’s website describes Living Archive as a tool for choreography developed between Google Arts and Culture Lab and Studio Wayne McGregor.

Then there’s the main attraction. Adés will lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic through the entire program, but it will be of greatest interest to hear how he leads the orchestra in Inferno. There are two soloists: Leila Josefowicz on violin and Kirill Gerstein on piano.

This is easily one of the most exciting offerings in the performing arts in Los Angeles all summer. I honestly believe if I had to pick only one thing to see this would be the one. You’ll want to be in the room where it happened.

This will mark the West Coast Premiere of this work and acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma will be performing.

Of his concerti, Salonen says in the program, “I also happen to like the concept of a virtuoso operating at the very limits of what is physically (and sometimes mentally) possible.*” These compositions easily fall into this category.

All four concerts will begin with a performance of Biber’s Battalia. The Salonen Concerto will follow. The concerts will all end with a performance of Beethoven’s 7th Symphony.
