Kim David Smith is not a household name. But he’s a fascinating and charismatic performer who specializes in putting modernist spins on music fromm the Weimar Republic. That’s precisely what made him the ideal person to serve as the emcee for ‪Death of Classical’s Tiergarten in New York City. The neo-Weimar cabaret show was part of Carnegie Hall’s Dancing on the Precipice series last spring.

Dancing on the Precipice looked at the arts that came out of the Weimar Republic. In this interview Smith talks about Tiergarten, the influence Marlene Dietrich has had on him and the topicality of the themes of that era’s music for today’s audiences.

I was able to attend Dancing on the Precipice and this was a wildly entertaining show. It was the second time I had seen Kim David Smith perform (the first having been at Joe’s Pub). He’s a massively engaging entertainer and conversationalist as this interview proves.
