One of the great things about being in Los Angeles is the great number of works that get either world premiere or west coast debut performances by that LA Philharmonic. This week, the Phil has a program of familiar music (Ravel’s Rapsodie Espagnole; Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) but also on the bill is the West Coast Premiere of mar’eh. The concerts take place at Walt Disney Concert on January 5th and 6th.

This violin concerto was written by Matthias Pintscher, who also serves as conductor for the two performances this week. The soloist is Renaud Capuçon. mar’eh had its first performance in 2011 and a new version debuted in 2015.

You might be inclined to see the concert for the familiar pieces (particularly one best known as Mickey Mouse’s nightmare in Fantasia), but the LA Philharmonic is always exploring new work and this violin concert is what excites me about this program.
