Maestro Gustavo Dudamel closes out his part of the LA Philharmonic’s Centennial Season with three performances of Gustav Mahler’s Eighth Symphony. This work is also called “The Symphony of a Thousand” given the large orchestra and the number of choruses that are called for in Mahler’s score. Performances will take place on May 30th, May 31st and June 2nd at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

You may recall that in February of 2012, Dudamel lead the LA Phil in a concert of this work at the Shrine Auditorium. This was, and probably remains, the largest single production ever undertaken by the orchestra. There were 1,011 musicians and singers on the stage over 18 risers for that concert.

It is improbable to expect another performance of this work that large. Or is it? These three concerts will feature Tamara Wilson – soprano; Leah Crocetto – soprano; Erin Morley – soprano; Mihoko Fujimura – mezzo-soprano, Tamara Mumford – mezzo-soprano, Simon O’Neill – tenor, Ryan McKinny – baritone, Morris Robinson – bass, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Pacific Chorale, The Los Angeles Children’s Chorus and The National Children’s Chorus.

Oh and for good measure, we’ll throw in the massive pipe organ.

If the size of the performance matches the one from seven years ago and takes place inside Walt Disney Concert Hall, is there a more powerful and stunning way to close out Dudamel’s part of the Centennial Season?

For tickets for May 30th go here.

For tickets for May 31st go here. (Note that this is a morning performance at 11 AM)

For tickets for June 2nd you’ll have to check with the box-office. The website does not offer the ability to purchase tickets for this performance which may indicate it has been sold out.
