If you were a fan of Denzel Washington’s film Fences, you’ll want to check out another work by acclaimed playwright August Wilson: Gem of the Ocean at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa. This play is set just after the start of the 20th Century in Pittsburgh. One man, Citizen Barlow calls on Esther, a woman claiming to be nearly 300 years with the ability to cleanse souls. He’s seeking her help for letting another man take the rap for a crime Barlow committed.
