For seventy weeks during the pandemic, we’ve been able to stream nightly productions from the vast library at the Metropolitan Opera. But all good things must come to an end. Next week’s Metropolitan Opera streaming will be the last one. The last online performance of this series will be on Sunday, July 25th.
But you have a voice in what gets programmed for the final week. Fans are encouraged to vote here for the seven opera productions to be streamed during week 71 at the Met. But you only have until 6:00 PM ET/3:00 PM PT Tuesday to vote! All of the choices come from previously streamed productions.
In March, during Week 53 at the Met, there was a viewer’s choice week. Your choices were Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffman from the 2009-2010 season; Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West from the 2018-2019 season; Donizett’s Anna Bolena from the 2011-2012 season; Philip Glass’ Akhnaten from the 2019-2020 season (one of the most repeated productions during all 70 weeks); Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia from the 2006-2007 season; Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin from the 2006-2007 season and Handel’s Agrippina from the 2019-2020 season.
Other popular productions were Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and one of the most popular operas in general was Der Rosenkavalier.
Will Mozart make the list? A full performance of Wagner’s Ring Cycle? Get your vote in ASAP!
Worth noting that as sad as this is, it does mean that the Metropolitan Opera will be able to launch their 2021-2022 season after over a year of closure. If you don’t live in the New York area, there will always be Live in HD simulcasts in theaters around the world. That is obviously quite good news!
