Tonight at the Classic Stage Company in New York, Fire and Air will have its world premiere. This is a new play by Terrence McNally (Master Class, Love! Valour! Compassion! and Lips Together, Teeth Apart) and it is directed by John Doyle (the revivals of The Color Purple, Company and Sweeney Todd.)
Fire and Air is set in the world of Russian Ballet. It follows Sergei Diaghliev’s Ballet Russes and in particular the relationship between Diaghliev and famed dancer Vaslav Nijinsky.
The cast includes John Glover (a Tony winner for Love! Valour! Compassion!), Douglas Hodge (a Tony winner for La Cage Aux Folles), Marsha Mason, Marin Mazzie, James Cuasti-Moyer and Jay Armstrong Johnson.
In other words, this show has a strong pedigree. It seems like the kind of show that could find its way to the Mark Taper Forum. Fire and Air runs through February 25th.
And for those who wondered by Marsha Mason, who was originally announced as the director of LA Theatre Works’ recent production of The Goodbye Girl, didn’t end up helming that show, we now know why.
