Eugene O’Neill felt so strongly about Long Day’s Journey Into Night that it was not allowed to be performed until after his death. This staggering play depicts one summer night in the life of the Tyronne family (who serve as a substitute for the playwright’s own family.) This production of Long Day’s Journey Into Night, which just closed at the BAM in New York, begins performances on Friday, June 8th and runs through July 1st at The Wallis in Beverly Hills.
Jeremy Irons, who has not appeared on stage in Los Angeles since his one-night performance as King Arthur in Camelot at the Hollywood Bowl in 2005, stars alongside recent Oscar nominee Lesley Manville (The Phantom Thread) as James and Mary Tyronne. Playing their sons Edmund and Jamie are Matthew Beard and Rory Keenan. Richard Eyre directs Long Day’s Journey Into Night, a production which began its life at the Bristol Old Vic.
O’Neill’s play is one of the Mount Everest of acting challenges for all four main characters. Having the chance to see this production, with this cast, is an opportunity not-to-be-missed for true fans of great drama.
