When I was a kid, I remember watching a television broadcast of Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera version of the Grimm Brother’s story of a witch who lured children  with candy in order for her to eat the kids. I know, perfect material for opera. And no, it isn’t that Engelbert Humperdinck. LA Opera is currently performing Hansel and Gretel, this perfect-for-the-holidays opera, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion through December 15th.

Susan Graham stars as the witch with Sasha Cooke as Hansel and Liv Redpath as Gretel. James Conlon conducts the LA Opera Orchestra and the production was directed and designed by Doug Fitch.

This is a perfect opera to introduce children to the art form. It only runs 2 hours and 15 minutes and that includes the intermission. It is based on a beloved story and there are enough tricks and special effects and unique characters to keep them interested.

Okay, maybe you’ll have to explain cannibalism.
