This weekend the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra continues its season with performances of music by Mozart + Schubert. The performances, as they usually are, are held at the Alex Theatre in Glendale on Saturday and at UCLA’s Royce Hall on Sunday.
Nicholas McGegan leads the orchestra in a program that features Rameau’s Music from Dardanus, Schubert’s Overture from Der Häusliche Krieg and the composer’s Symphony No. 6.
What stands out to me as the highlight of the program is the Mozart of it all: the Piano Concerto No. 19. The soloist for the concerto is Jeremy Denk – easily one of our finest and most thoughtful pianists.
When I spoke to Denk in 2018, he told me of playing classical music:
“You get a different sense of repose and drive you want in various pieces; what they are doing and what they are after and what you are after? What do you want to communicate to the audience? Each composer has a different language and questions and problems you have to deal with.”
It will be fascinating for those in attendance to see what Denk wants to communicate with the Mozart. Rest assured it will be terrific.
